Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Wed Feb 6, 2013, 10:30 AM

The Republican Party is the most vile, puerile, evil, sick, disgusting, and cruel organization

that has ever darkened America's horizon.

There is no good side to them. They do nothing that is worthwhile or useful. They are purely a destructive force, and they will either destroy the world or they will fail to destroy the world.

I don't believe it was always this way. But it is now.

The GOP has become the expression of our id, a collection of leering, half-insane adult children who collectively possess a moral compass that unnerringly points directly south.

Period.

4. they're craven for power, influence

. . . they're the gatekeepers and orchestrator of the wealth that flows out to their wealthy benefactors; subsequently to their own bank accounts in the form of kickbacks and donations for speeches, appearances and such.

Their compass has no bearing; it swings wildly toward whatever their petty, self-interested, and opportunistic ambitions dictate. Money, money, money, money . . . money.

13. You're wrong.

They have always been this way.

I give you H.P. Lovecraft circa 1936:

"As for the Republicans how can one regard seriously a frightened, greedy, nostalgic huddle of tradesmen and lucky idlers who shut their eyes to history and science, steel their emotions against decent human sympathy, cling to sordid and provincial ideals exalting sheer acquisitiveness and condoning artificial hardship for the non-materially-shrewd, dwell smugly and sentimentally in a distorted dream-cosmos of outmoded phrases and principles and attitudes based on the bygone agricultural-handicraft world, and revel in (consciously or unconsciously) mendacious assumptions (such as the notion that real liberty is synonymous with the single detail of unrestricted economic license or that a rational planning of resource-distribution would contravene some vague and mystical 'American heritage') utterly contrary to fact and without the slightest foundation in human experience? Intellectually, the Republican idea deserves the tolerance and respect one gives to the dead."
Letter to C.L. Moore (August 1936), quoted in "H.P. Lovecraft, a Life" by S.T. Joshi, p. 574

makes them immune to any rational intervention. With the John Birch turned Teabaggers crowd we, as society, have strictly moved into harm reduction mode.

Recognize they will fiddle behind their gated communities and conservative packed federal courts until our civil society is destroyed.

As is said, the "id" is the "kid", and there are no ego, or superego adults in charge. Therefore, containment of the damage they will attempt to do is now our mission.

Which I believe some other posters may have also called it or implied. While there's underlying truth to it I considered it hyperbole. You disagree I'm sure, and no I'm not going to debate the definition of hyperbole with you or anyone else who wants to jump in. I also was not saying "C'mon they aren't that bad...they're not Nazis." so I have no need or interest to clarify a comment I didn't make. talking about why you see it as hyperbole. That is a legitimate opinion, and I would think you can say why. We can have a conversation about it without agreeing. You didn't make the exact comment, but that was the meaning. I was paraphrasing you, to point out how I (or anybody) could take it. I could understand it if you meant it sarcastically, but you didn't indicate it was sarcasm.

But I see you won't explain anything.

You're right, we are engaged in a classic confrontation of good vs evil. The two party system in this country has devolved into a sham. There are no real compromises. It is a fight to the death that we must win.

48. Yup. IMO we are being rallied into Blue Team mentality.

which is always extremely important when the news of the day threatens to shake our loyalty to corporate Democrats in any area.

Note that the OP here doesn't reference any current news story or event that elicited this rallying for the Two Minutes Hate. It's just a call out of the blue to despise Republicans and reaffirm our group identity in opposition to them.

At the same time, we got an OP today inviting declarations that President Obama is the BEST President of our time. Again, no reason stated for that particular OP to appear today....just a general call to loyalty and emotional fervor on behalf of this administration.

Yesterday we got news of perhaps the most chilling betrayal of our Constitution, our nation, and every single one of us that we have seen yet from this administration...and that is saying a lot. Our President has now claimed the right to murder any American, without need for evidence or due process.

When a party has been hijacked by corporate interests, rallying us into our pro-Blue Team, anti-Red Team fervor is sometimes the best way to handle potential blowback to policies that horrify the people.

Whip up the partisan fervor. Distract from what is being done to the Constitution, and get us in that state of mind in which we will reflexively defend anything the Blue Team does...

It seems important right now for some reason...

53. Republicans come close if not fully meet the definition of a "hate group".

Let's see the list of targets: women, retiree's, government employees, immigrants, college students who tend not to vote for them, any if not most non Republicans, anyone poor, any ethnic or racial group that tends not to vote for them.

From Wikipedia the definition of "hate group".

A hate group is an organized group or movement that advocates and practices hatred, hostility, or violence towards members of a race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation or other designated sector of society. According to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), hate groups' "primary purpose is to promote animosity, hostility, and malice against persons belonging to a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin which differs from that of the members of the organization." The Southern Poverty Law Center's (SPLC) definition of a "hate group" includes those having beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics.

54. Considering most of us agree what the GOP stands for,

what use are they? Why do we have a 2 party system at all? It's supposed to keep congress and the administrative branch in check with the voice of the people. It's supposed to keep arguments in a central position so that it can serves all Americans. It is not doing that. It's one side trying to plunder and destroy the country and the other is trying to give Americans a reason to live. The whole thing is screwed because of radical RW absolutists with a death-wish from god. It's organized, legal, god-ordained, terrorism.

How do we end this blight on humankind?

...in advancing the interests of the rich over the poor.

the difference between the two is that the democrats arrange for a bone to be thrown to the masses every once in a while, usually at times when it is judged that otherwise mass movements against the system would erupt, causing serious harm to entrenched power (see: obama). the dems are truly excellent at getting you to believe they are on the side of the masses. we have been moving in the direction of fascism for a hundred years and the dems are complicit in that historical movement.

but primarily a psychological struggle with themselves. All their enemies just happen to be minorities and every issue can be traced back in some way or another to preserving their warped and out-dated sense of power and masculinity. That is a psychological struggle, not a political one. And they seem to be unconscious that their pathology is in full view through their political choices and struggles.

64. I agree with this

The GOP lately seems to only want to repeal things, and stop bills from passing. Other than that, where are their ideas? They want to repeal healthcare reform but have no new ideas to offer, it's the same with everything the GOP wants to do away with; repeal and just leave it at that. Plus the Tbagger nuts don't help them at all.
