Obama Says Medicare and Social Security Cuts Still on the Table - FDL

Obama Says Medicare and Social Security Cuts Still on the Table

<snip>

No bad idea supported by President Obama is ever permanently defeated, it is at best simply stopped temporarily. In a statement today about the sequestration cuts Obama wanted to make it clear that the proposed entitlements cuts that he has previously backed are still on the table. In fact Obama made sure to repeat this point. From the transcript: http://foxnewsinsider.com/2013/02/05/transcript-president-obama-asks-congress-to-avoid-sequestration-cuts-says-we-cant-just-cut-our-way-to-prosperity/

The proposals that Iíve put forward during the fiscal cliff negotiations, in discussions with Speaker Boehner and others, are still very much on the table.

I just want to repeat; the deals that I put forward, the balanced approach of spending cuts and entitlement reform and tax reform that I put forward are still on the table.

Iíve offered sensible reforms to Medicare and other entitlements and my healthcare proposals achieved the same amount of savings by the beginning of the next decade as the reforms that have been proposed by the bipartisan Bowles-Simpson fiscal commission.

While Obama did not specifically mention any entitlement cuts in this statement, it is being widely reported what cuts Obama has back in previous possible deals. The biggest were raising the Medicare retirement age from 65 to 67 and switching to the chained-CPI for Social Security.

The switch to chained-CPI would effectivey be a yearly cut on every senior with the sizes of the cut growing as a senior ages...

Got it. And it's pretty damned stupid.

3. I heard that today on the news and it made me very sad.

We are going to be thrown under the bus no matter what logic and facts tell us about those programs having nothing to do with the deficit and that they actually help the economy because most seniors spend all their SS on necessities.

9. This isn't the change I was hoping for. We're talking elderly people here. Our most vulnerable.

How Obama can even consider this an option and claim he's on our side is beyond disappointing. Drones, the murder of Americans with no trial, indefinite detention and cutting Social Security. WTF!

May as well be McCain in office

7. Yup.

But whether he means it, or whether this is a make-them-say-no-to-their-deepest-desire gamble, is as yet undetermined.

But it sucks. The worst case scenario is he really means it, and the "best" case scenario is he's gambling with other people's money.

Never bet on something you're not willing to lose.

Not enjoying the 21st century so far.

11. Obama Says Medicare and Social Security Cuts Still on the Table....

and will remain on the table until some serious cuts are made to make a reasonable retirement an impossibility.

We are totally screwed when we can't even elect a Democrat that will do the right thing.

Sad sad sad.

12. Aren't you glad

that you found a "Democratic" website where you are free to say that Democrats can't elect a Democrat who will "do the right thing"?

Sad sad sad. But I guess that's the way the political cookie crumbles - along with "Democratic" websites.

13. If we are going to cut social security...

Enough with this only screw the future nonsense. They want cuts? Cut it now, immediately. None of this chained CPI and raising the age BS. That's just a cop out. It means current recipients are golden and everyone else gets nothing but the bill.

Cut it now and see how far that nonsense goes.

16. The 1% thinks there are way too many old people around who can't scrub motel toilets very fast

The way to deal with that is a program of mass murder, apparently.

17. Cuts in benefits to social security and Medicare recipients are needed to pay for BHO's

tax cuts for those earning from $250,000 to $450,000. I surely couldn't see that one coming.
