Baby Boomers in Worse Health Than Their Parents

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/02/130205143330.htm

Dana King, M.D., chair of the WVU Department of Family Medicine and lead author on the study, said he and his team were somewhat surprised to find that boomers weren't as healthy as previously believed. In fact, baby boomers have higher levels of hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and higher rates of disability than their parents.

To conduct the study, King and his team analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination survey (NHANES), including NHANES III (1988-1994) and the NHANES for 2007-2010, focusing on respondents who were 46-64 years old during either period. The two cohorts were compared in regard to health status, functional and work disability, healthy lifestyle characteristics, and presence of chronic disease.

In addition, while life expectancy is higher for boomers than it was for the previous generation, more boomers are unhealthy by their own admission. Dr. King said only one in 10 baby boomers reported being in excellent health compared to one-third of their parents who reported the same.

snip >>King said that as baby boomers move into their 60s and 70s, they will utilize the healthcare system more than ever before. Doctors' offices will be busier than ever before, and the need for healthcare professionals will sky rocket in the next decade<<

2. The Republicans

should know these stats BEFORE they attempt upping the SS benefits age.

According to them, we will all live to be 300, and we should work and pay taxes until we're 235.

Thank you fast food, processed frozen food, gaming and being sedentary! Yay!

I'm sure stress about the economy has nothing to do with it. Nah.

Now, concerned about whether or not at any time a godam bullet will enter my body.

3. Apart from colds and flu, in the past 10 years

I have had a very bad sinus infection (10 years ago), food poisoning (5 years ago), and a sprained ankle (year ago). Last time I took any meds at all was Advil for that ankle. I will be eligible for Medicare in November. Guess I am that 1%.

You apparently know very little.

7. Well, good.

Maybe a bunch of us will die and they can stop harping on us for taking our "entitlements."

10. I'm all for it.

And I'll be up for it for the next 26 years or so since I'm planning to live to 93. I'm in great health, so watch out, youngsters!

14. Lol

I'm old too. My health is relatively good, but my body is getting a bit stiff and creaky. I finally decided to work fewer days so I can sleep and exercise more.

So far so good.

16. Hmmm. Might be a selection artifact...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confounds_and_artifacts

This seems mostly to be about self-reporting regarding health rather than actual health? Could be the demographic in question is exhibiting a cultural shift in the doctor-patient relationship and perception of health.

Not that I would know, and I would hope that the study considered this. (If it has the wherewithall so to do. There is possibly no way to exclude such a phenomenon).

21. Incomes declining for the last 10 years, and flat 30 years before that

Our parents, at our age, had just seen their family incomes double due to the New Deal policies that Reagan started dismantling in 1980.

22. Not a bit surprising

Not only do most boomers I know not even know if their bodies get the required vitamins and nutrients they require every day-

they aren't the least bit interested in hearing about it. Maybe it's just the people I know.

Just look at the crap people shovel into their mouths. And they wonder why their bodies revolt?

Take a quick look at the following video: This woman is SEVENTY FREAKING years old. When I was young 70 was half a foot in the grave, and everyone just assumed this is how it had to be. People 50 don't even look as good as this incredible example of how much just eating the right foods can do---

Ask yourself: Do you know if you ate the *required* amount of vitamins, nutrients and essential fatty acids today?

This week? Last month? Just the absence of one vital nutrient can throw off the whole balance, weakening the value of all the other nutrients.
