Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Sun Feb 3, 2013, 10:00 PM

I really don't understand the anti-Beyonce posts

here on DU.

Full disclosure - I'm not really a fan of her music, but I recognize that she is very talented.

Yes, she is also very sexy and uses that to her advantage - as do many artists and has been done before in many previous Super Bowls without the animosity that Beyonce has received. Personally, my favorite half-time show was McCartney, but that may be because I'm a huge McCartney fan.

But Beyonce seems to be getting more flack here on DU than Janet Jackson did with her "wardrobe malfunction" which was much more controversial.

So why is Beyonce getting so much flack?

IMHO, it has nothing to do with her performance at the Super Bowl. I'm just guessing here, but I think it has to have something to do with her performance at the White House.

Is that it? Seriously?

30. You are sadly mistaken if you think Madonna, who was rightly claiming her THRONE at that S-B, is

unhip.

Let me know when Bey makes a half-BILLION in one year:

http://www.inquisitr.com/234458/madonna-set-to-earn-500-million-dollars-this-year/

As for dancing? Madonna has from the beginning been a professional dancer, and can dance the proverbial RINGS around Beyonce, who simply hops around while tossing her hair.

57. Huh? What?

Madonna has from the beginning been a professional dancer, and can dance the proverbial RINGS around Beyonce

I have seen every single Madonna video and even her American Band Stand stuff. I love Madonna as an artist much more than Beyonce, but anyone that thinks she is a better dancer/singer/entertainer than Beyonce is tripping on some VERY bad stuff. VERY bad.

I remember when Madonna first came out with "Holiday." Everyone thought she was black because she used very recognizable R&B music and rhythms. She didn't sell well until they made a video. When everyone saw the "blonde" hair, suddenly her career shot off. Shocking.

71. That was because Jellybean Benitez was producing and mixing her shit.

He MADE Madonna. She owes her entire career to him.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Benitez

He also put her voice through the electronic wringer because that poor girl, when she started out, could not sing!

I will say, she took vocal lessons, she learned to move a little (but she can't dance--she walks around with purpose and is carried by strapping men) and she made the most of what she had; and of course she was outrageous, which is always good for a bit of mileage. AND she picked catchy tunes and knew how to court a bit of controversy but not too much, and to manage the press. She's made a few missteps, but she's pretty savvy overall. Hell, she's rich, so she was no dummie...!

76. Yep, I remember Jellybean!

Didn't he also do some stuff with Jody Whatley? She and Sade are the only two women that I would seriously consider drinking their bath water. I mean, I come as close to having a crush on those two as a heterosexual woman could have on another woman.

You really said the operative phrase when it comes to Madonna - "she made the most of what she had." Which was by no means a great voice or fantastic dancing skills. But she has PRESENCE out of her behind. I've been a Madonna fan forever and I love her truly. But the idea that she is a better singer or dancer than Beyonce, who I am not a fan of but I still recognize her many gifts, is insane.

77. There aren't many folks Jellybean didn't produce--he worked with Whitney Houston a lot, I know.

I think Madonna worked smart. Her stuff is catchy and fun, and because it was well produced, it stands the test of time. Beyonce's stuff is the same--she picks her songs carefully, she has her mother do her costumes so nothing gets messed up or falls out, and she knows how to market herself.

I remember seeing her as a relative unknown in an Austin Powers flick and saying "That child is going to be a SUPERSTAR." I was right!

67. So money makes you better?

Gee, with that logic, we should have voted for Romney, or whoever can buy the Oval office.

The fact is, some people earn their money, but most rich steal it, and in her case, the "Material Girl" made her cash by helping popularize everything that made the eighties suck: the materialism, the crassness, the cheap superficiality, the greed, the self-absorption, the formulaic, overproduced approach to music, fashion, and everything else. She really should be seated right alongside Ronnie Ray Gun as the embodiment of the 80's which of course, set the stage for this wave of suck the 21st century is.

Yes, she has made it through to the present, in part because there are a lot of Gen Xer's who like her because she reminded them of when they were the young, stupid kids who wanted to grow up and do cocaine in a Wall Street office. I will even admit there were moments, like "ray of Light" where she seemed to want to move away from that crap, but every time, the money called.

And I know she is a Gay Icon, but frankly, the LGBT can, have and will do better. The folks that produced Da Vinci and Marlene Dietrich will not need Madonna.

And yes, I hope that Lady Gaga gives up imitating Madonna and shows the actual talent she had. The girl was composing symphonies in her teens, but realized that to make it, you have to follow the template of the Material Girl. The reason Madonna hates her so much is because Gaga is doing as PARODY the same shit Madonna did as art, kind of the way Stephen Colbert pisses off the right wing reporters, because he shows them how stupid they look.

78. Don't listen to music you don't like.

If people like a little bubblegum, though, why be so kvetchy about it? Let people enjoy what makes them happy.

It's a small thing.

You know, if I could get up on a stage and jump around and sing and people would pay me to do that, I'd do it in a heartbeat. There are worse ways to make a buck, I'm sure.

I don't agree with your Gaga analysis, either. She's taking a genre, which, like it or not, is where popular music has been grounded in the last thirty years or so, and pulling it a bit further down the road. It's not a parody. When she "resembles" Madonna, it's an homage.

But, bottom line--music appreciation is a personal thing. Enjoy what you like, eschew what you don't like...it's all good.

particularly talented and she is taking one of the very few spots that a truly talented person should have.

She is a manufactured celebrity. She is a competent dancer with a mediocre voice. She has her career because her daddy is a record executive. There are a thousand much more talented singers within walking distance of whatever studio she happens to be in at any given moment.

She is representative of what is wrong with the entertainment industry.

15. I was in the "industry"

and she has an excellent voice.

More importantly, she has that charisma that makes her a performer.

As an old teacher of mine used to say, it's about a quarter talent and about 3 quarters ego. Of course, he was paraphrasing others.

I agree in that I would like to see more musicality involved. Unfortunately, it's more about performance than musicality.

That being said, I think that only a person that was tone-deaf would deny that she is a good singer.

Granted, I have heard better - but there are few who have the unique mix of talents that she has which propelled her to the point where she is today.

Granted, a lot of it is "who you know" but as another teacher once pointed out - when you're in that position you have to listen to the people you know you can trust.

Shit, the guy worked as a salesman for XEROX before his daughter's group took off. It was only then that he was able to get into the production gig.

Beyonce does nearly nothing for me though she is a beautiful lady. None of her music appeals to me.

Personally I don't give a crap what anyone likes but I thought it was pretty classless for someone to berate a guy who didn't want his daughter to see mostly naked Beyonce and her dancers gyrating all over without all that much singing going on. We rant and rave about people having kids and then not being involved parents and then turn around and call them turds if they get involved and be parents.

I think Trumad owes Kwassa an apology.

For point of reference, I just recently got Miles Davis' Kind of Blue on 180 gram vinyl and just today I bought this CD:

But I doubt I'll see either of those at the Superbowl.

She has a decent voice, but there are many who are much better. Her performance was likewise pretty middle of the road in quality. If you like her, fine, but I wasn't impressed.

in his life with the younger set), or some band that nobody has ever heard of (that is then dropped as cool the minute they sell more than 100 albums) it's just not any good for some of the music snobs that reside here.

I can typically find something to like out of most artists' work...

God help me, there's even a like-ability to "Beauty and a Beat" by that cute little whatshisface...with the hair.

37. I am one of those detractors, and I am happy to explain.

I am a fan of hers. I don't buy her music, but I don't complain when the kids play it in the car.

Her half time show was ridiculous. It was an electronic mishmosh as the backdrop to a techie, flashy strip club routine. Her first song was just horrible. Were there any lyrics? She wiggled and grunted for a while then dropped to the stage as the camera popped overhead for multi-Beyonce kaleidoscope. "Ladies and gentlemen, the June Taylor Dancers," err... dancer. We then segued into the bump-and-grind, put-your-hand-on-crotch-and-thrust-that-pelvis move that I have paid good money to see in person; the fact that it was free and on network television actually diminished the sleaze and killed the entertainment value of a good strip tease. She limped through All the Single Ladies, in which the sound mixer fell asleep.

Destiny's Child was great.

Beyonce's fault? No. But, good god.

And, no, it had nothing to do with her White House performance.

It's already become sort of an anthem.

And...

My daughter has been singing "Bootylicious" since she was was about 11 (she's going to be 23 in a month). Just because I don't care for her music (except I do kind of like Bootylicious ) I think there is a place for her when we look back on these decades. Otherwise we age ourselves and sound like our great-grandmothers who were horrified by Elvis' hips.

54. It becomes apparent that you are a music snob.

No, the song was rather popular (which probably means it is shit to a music snob):

""Single Ladies" peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and has been certified quadruple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), having sold more than 5 million paid digital downloads as of October 2012. The song reached the top ten on the singles charts of Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom, and achieved multi-platinum certifications in many of these countries. As of November 2009, "Single Ladies" had sold more than 6.1 million digital copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time worldwide.

I thought it was ok. I think a lot of people have very high expectations for the Super Bowl show, but I have never really been that impressed by any of them.

I think Beyonce is gorgeous, great dancer, and can sing. Not a fan of pop music (or whatever genre her songs are) and I'm not an old fuddy duddy. Unless 41 is old? Isn't 40 the new 30??

My very spirital/religious boyfriend was OFFENDED by the show. I wasn't offended. I would have preferred my young kids (if I had any) did not watch it/try to emulate those dance moves though!

That was, of course, live. No lip synching, no autotune, just talent.

With that said I have nothing against Beyonce. And I understand perfectly why performances like the inauguration and superbowl are lip synched. That said, why would anyone rave about a lip synched performance? Why have Beyonce there at all? They could have had William Shatner out there pretending to sing and it would have been no less legitimate.

92. I actually really like Beyonce

and I'm middle aged.

It looks like it started when a mom said she didn't want her 5-year-old daughter watching it and so she turned the channel. Now I will say that I am opposed to anyone calling anyone else a slut - I hate that word - and this mom used that word. But other than that, I think she wasn't treated fairly. She said that her family is African American and she sees African-American women too often sexualized, and saw a great number of them sexualized during the halftime show, and she doesn't want her daughter to grow up thinking she has to sexualize herself to be a success, since such a high percentage of women of color (not just African American even) do. White women do too to a large extent but not as much. This mom wants her daughter to see more images of women like Michelle Obama and fewer of highly sexualized musical performers. That sounds reasonable to me. But I think she might have been dogpiled over it.

Anyway, that is not being a prude, or thinking women should wear burqas.

I didn't see the performance but, again, I do like Beyonce.

I'm watching the glorious and luxurious Super Bowl suite on ET that her and her family used to watch the Super Bowl, while the serfs and common folk are forced to pay to build it and my blood pressure goes up by the moment.

I despise how we have allowed the USA to become a nation of elites, haves and have-mores, and some on the left believe that the political ties of the have mores can justify it all. BS.... the elite in the USA have made it on our backs and the right of opulence for them at our expense shouldn't be acceptable.

everything is connected and Beyonce is perceived to be Pro-President Obama and therefore is targeted by the same Orly Taitz reasons in the rightwing media (and most of the media is rightwing.)

The same hatred for President Obama (starting and ending with the fact that a black man is now President, well, to the same crowd the audacity of having a black woman (and remember Janet and her malfunction led directly to Dan Rather's ouster) is driving this whole thing in the media.

It goes far beyond entertainment IMHO, it goes to the heart of everything the
rightwing extremist republicanteapartylibertarians hate.

it's as easy to see what drives Rush & Sean and Orly Taitz and the others.
The show was in vivid seen on TV digital colors. The transparency though is easy as black and white and the guns the haters in the media cling to.

The media is saying, come after their guns, they will come after Beyonce.

IMHO

Other than that I don't know why anybody would have any problem.

She is an asterisk in the music history books. Somewhere between Roy Orbison and the Sex Pistols.

There won't be a single song of hers that anybody will be singing 10 years from now. They all sound the same anyway Just sing any old thing over a minor 9th chord and use lots of melisma for no apparent reason and you'll sound exactly like every one of her songs.
