87. You can't set up live sound in 15 minutes. That is a 3 hour job minimum to do concert quality sound

Super Bowl shows are ALWAYS lip-synced. Even when the Boston Pops played a few years back, it was pre-recorded.

In some cases, they may let the featured singer actually sing live over a track that has everything else (band and backup vocals) pre-recorded. There is no way you can handle more than a half dozen mics in such a short time. I didn't watch the Beyonce show because that stuff sounds dreadfully monotonous to me, so I can't say if she was allowed to sing over a track or if the whole thing was lip-synced. I assume she was dancing a bit. If a person is doing a strenuous dance routine, it is almost certainly lip-synced or else you would hear the strain in the singing. If she did any talking between songs, then she probably had a live mic. But that doesn't mean the singing was live.

And you may notice that there are never any amplifiers on stage when there is a "live band". Back in the glory days, rock bands had an arsenal of amps right on stage with them. That is rarely done these days because it puts so much sound on the stage that it is very difficult to control feedback. So even if a band is playing live, they will be piping all their sound into the master mix, and then they will rely on sophisticated monitor systems to hear what they are playing. This makes the stage relatively quiet and feedback-free. That's great, but it takes hours to get the monitors adjusted right. Even if this were all tested ahead of time, that is just too many variables to deal with in a short set-up window.

74. Yep. The music sucked. Plus, the whole thing was disjointed. It was like

no section of the act could go over 15 seconds, lest the audience get bored.

I think she's a major talent, but this show didn't showcase her talent at all.

Nor would he look away from the TV for nothing or no-one.

I was actually made MORE uncomfortable, as a parent, early in the first quarter, after a tackle, when a couple players got into a shoving/pissing match. I don't feel this game demonstrated a lot of good sportsmanship, and that concerned me.

Last edited Mon Feb 4, 2013, 12:08 PM - Edit history (1)

The other thing that I noticed. There was not one man on the stage; all the brass, guitars, back-up singers and dancers were red hot women!!

This was the first time in my lifetime that I can recall that happening and I was really thrilled. I've grown up with the norm being all men on stage for pop groups (with maybe 3 Black women singers as backup so they sound good, LOL!), or a couple of females thrown in. I think Paul Simon will add a couple women to the 30 or so men on stage with him.

I'm sure some of you can come up with another instance of this, but I don't recall a huge production like this that was all female. I've seen it all male many, many times, but never all female.

Loved it!! I wish I could have been up there with them (looking like that)!

and FYI in all seriousness Beyonce is about as far away as you can get from that word.

You are being OTT. There are MUCH worse role models out there... and there are better ones. THe key to success is a MIX.

all of them young women of color. And how is this role-modeling for my child? or any child of color? You will be valuable when you can be a sex object at the Super Bowl. An empowering message if ever there was one.

108. Yes she is far, far, far away from being one.

Go ahead and define the word...

Just do it...

What does it mean to you...

The woman is successful, has only married ONE guy, oh and has a kid which she had AFTER she was married. Oh an she donates to charities (and yes she performed in Dubai... that was bad). But really to use that word to describe her is OTT.

WHO are you Rush Limbaugh in disguise? Your comment's are OTT and should be edited to remove that hateful word.

At Sun Feb 3, 2013, 11:42 PM you sent an alert on the following post:

oh, my, I shouldn't call things by what they are.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=2307987

REASON FOR ALERT:

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)

YOUR COMMENTS:

TOTAL Hypocrisy. It's okay to use the word when they WANT to apparently. Let's hide this post and be fair. I'm over this. It's the Superbowl... you know good ole' American entertainment. Gosh, goly, gee.

JURY RESULTS

A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Sun Feb 3, 2013, 11:54 PM, and voted 3-3 to LEAVE IT ALONE.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: I may be wrong, but I don't think hypocricy is a hide-able offense.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Just an opinion; not hide-worthy.
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT and said: I also believe that this poster is a bit over the top calling Beyonce a slut. The show was suggestive but not slutty. Should have used the word inappropriate.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given.

Thank you.

That's what the nasty Republican misogynistic assholes we fight against here everyday call women.

50. Thank you

Yes, most female 'pop' stars since Madonna are simply actresses. They are marketed as 'shocking' and 'sexy' young women who rarely have a lot of actual artistic/musical talent. They are capable of incredible acrobatic dance feats whilst singing simultaneously.

Most here don't even realize how technology today allows for massive amounts of vocal processing even at a 'live' performance.

126. There are always exception

though sadly Whitney Houston was 'made' a pop diva - dancing, acting, singing, performing, etc. Her untimely death attests to the pressures that were placed upon her that she was incapable of dealing with.

Yes, I admit to preferring her vocal talents far more than Beyonce, and correct, Whitney Houston was not as concerned with 'sexy' as Beyonce obviously is.

and we provide her with many other images of black women.

We teach her critical thinking skills, and emphasize independent thinking, in looking at everything around her. I am not worried, she is very smart.

82. First off...if she's five she's an impressionable child.

When she's older it would be easier to communicate to her appropriate behaviours and what is not appropriate. I don't get why people ask questions as yours which imply that you take issue with the fact he won't let his daughter see the performance. It's the same reason people wouldn't even at 13 allow their child to watch a porno or NC-17 rated film. Every parent knows they can't protect their child from everything...but they can sure as hell try and warn them away from certain things and behaviours early on.

102. Ass shaking and ass cheeks showing. Misogyny of women by women.

That's what was going on. If I had a daughter that's not what I would show her. Dancing with the Stars....I would, if dancing and the respect of women is what I am looking for. Beyonce like most African Women in the biz buys into these sorts of things that are popular in the Rap and R&B culture. By engaging in these actions they support he misogyny of women, enforce it, and use it for their own monetary gain.

Look I get it. You don't want your 5 y/o daughter watching Beyonce shake her booty to a song named Bootylicious. There are many role models out there, but I don't feel like a very financially successful African American woman who managed her own career, and growth, who has only married once, and only had one child while in wedlock deserves to be called such hateful language. But calling Beyonce that word is just OTT, and I feel it's improper for this discussion board.

However that being said I alerted on the bit I was offended by, and the DU jury let it stand.

146. Have her take belly dance classes then :)

What is Belly Dance?
Many experts say belly dancing is the oldest form of dance, having roots in all ancient cultures from the orient to India to the mid-East. Probably the greatest misconception about belly dancing is that it is intended to entertain men.

Throughout history, this ritualized expression has usually been performed for other women, generally during fertility rites or parties preparing a young woman for marriage. In most cases, the presence of men is not permitted.

Belly dancing is natural to a woman's bone and muscle structure with movements emanating from the torso rather than in the legs and feet. The dance often focuses upon isolating different parts of the body, moving them independently in sensuous patterns, weaving together the entire feminine form. Belly dancing is generally performed barefoot, thought by many to emphasize the intimate physical connection between the dancer, her expression, and Mother Earth.

Not knocking them, just not my thing. I also thought the booty-shaking was perhaps a bit over the top, but that's the way it goes.

My main beef with the performance was actually the lack of a cover song. The audience is so huge for these halftime shows, that I think it's nice for the artist to have fun with a cover, especially if they don't have 20+ years of hits under their belt (she has about 15 years of hits, which is a lot for somebody her age). For artists like McCartney and The Who, that's not really an issue. But as popular as she is, most of the people I watched the game with didn't recognize a single song.

So in the end it was kind of disappointing, but isn't that par for the course for a halftime show?

96. I'm not a fan of her singing, not much vocal range IMO -

- however, would have loved Jennifer Hudson to have done the half-time show. That girl has a set of pipes!

124. But is kind of boring...

The Super Bowl is all about making profit... boring does not equal profits.

Hence why Mumford and Sons has not done a halftime show recently.

97. YES! So good...

Love the DC reunion... one can only hope it's a more long-term thing!

Destiny's Child's Super Bowl performance was something of an open secret. Though Michelle Williams denied that it was happening, there was just too much evidence to the contrary: Williams herself was not busy on Sunday, Beyonce refused to deny a DC3 reunion was planned and the group released a single and album of old material on the preceding Tuesday.

So when Beyonce was joined by Williams and Kelly Rowland during the halftime show, there was hardly any reason for shock -- except, perhaps, at the brevity of the reunion.

109. Beyonce looks like a pop star

and she can sing to, and im not even a big fan of hers..I prefer Katy Perry or Avril Lavigne music..

And yes, to be a pop STAR you have to look like one,...And that's not me being mean, that's simple REALITY..

130. Meh.

It did nothing for me. Good voice, boring songs, vocals drowned out by instrumentation, and way too skimpy of outfits (I thought we were supposed to be outraged at the hyper-sexualization of the Super Bowl?).

Glad you enjoyed it, though.

Why all the outrage?

134. I thought it sucked. Lots of shrieking and ass-shaking with not that much singing.

She does have talent but this didn't showcase it.

At ALL.

136. Will take your word for it.

The only thing I cared for less during the game - other than the halftime performance - was the power failure.

164. Did anyone ever see Tina Turner perform?

I wasnt alive back then, bt they have a similar style ....I dont understand the uproar. Beyonce is MUCH classier than many of the acts today imo.
