Florence Arizona Student Suspended Over Picture Of Gun

FLORENCE, AZ - A high school student in Florence said he has been suspended because of a picture of a gun.

Daniel McClaine Jr., a freshman at Poston Butte High School, said he saved the picture as his desktop background on his school-issued computer.
A teacher noticed it and turned him in.

The picture shows an AK-47 on top of a flag.

McClaine said the school initially suspended him for three days Friday.

Since the laptop belongs to the school, the district policy states students are prohibited from “sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures,” and cannot access, send, create or forward pictures that are considered “harassing, threatening, or illegal.”

5. Generally not in the suspend-happy districts

They'll just as happily suspend students for having action figures with half-centimeter guns as part of the outfit, citing weapons policies.

3. That's just stupid...

I don't appreciate pictures of guns and flags together as if it's some kind of patriotic message either. But, I wouldn't suspend anyone over it.

4. The proper thing to do would be to inform him of the improperness of the wall paper

and make sure he knew what was and was not appropriate in the future - For the first offense.
After a couple of more offenses, then the school can get nasty with him, including, the school supplying the wall paper.

6. I don't even consider the wallpaper improper or inappropriate.

If he wants to have a picture of a gun, what's the harm?

Freedom of speech: some people just don't get it.

9. It might have been the flag, given it was a Yugoslav one. (nt)
