Detroit as vacation spot? Believe in it

On a recent flight from New York City to Detroit, I asked the passenger sitting next to me if she was returning home.

"No," she said, with a chuckle. "Actually," she said, "I'm going on vacation..."

And those signs were on display during a recent visit to Detroit, while accompanied by a native New Yorker. As I frequently do with visitors, I provided a tour of the city and the surrounding areas. I showed him the good and the bad. And, make no mistake, there's plenty of bad.

However, the preconceived images of "urban decay" and "ruin" are not what he took back to New York. To his surprise, he saw a central business district with new buildings and clean sidewalks, quietly emerging as a home to fledgling tech companies. He witnessed the transformation of Corktown and signs of artists and filmmakers -- the vital engines of gentrification -- relocating from Brooklyn and Los Angeles to capitalize on the city's affordable housing -- and evidence of suburbanites and real-estate developers from New York, L.A. and Miami spending millions to buy property and gamble on Detroit's resurgence...

1. There's so much history in Detroit.

Even the abandoned houses and buildings have a story to tell. Detroit has seen it all: the glory, the downfall, and the rebirth. That's quite a story. For those like me who love old cars, there's a ton of stuff to see and do in the area.

I think Detroit would be an excellent destination for a vacation!

2. Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village are not to be missed.

See actual historical stuff and interesting exhibits in Dearborn with your family, instead of fake plastic Disney imitations in Orlando.

4. Got that right

I love the place.

There is a lot of History but for me Cobo Hall as the North pole when I was a child will never be beat.

8. That huge Diego Rivera mural in the Detroit Institute of Arts

is stunning, too.

The new museum of African art (I forget what it's called officially) is supposed to be very good, too.

Then there's Ann Arbor very close by.
