Man gets Gun, Gets Trained, starts acting like a complete moron

By Joel Achenbach, Published: February 2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Heading toward a Starbucks on the pricey side of town, Rob Farago is packing. The Glock 30SF lives on his right hip, holstered under his jacket, with 10 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber. Backup ammo is in another pocket.

Farago didn’t used to be a gun guy. He was a car guy. He had a popular blog called the Truth About Cars. He sold it in 2009 and searched for a new consumer topic, landing on guns.

He bought his first gun a week before the debut of TheTruthAboutGuns.com. He took a firearms class. He filled out the paperwork and went through the background check to get a permit to carry a gun. He now owns 18 guns.

“Once you put a gun on, you gain situational awareness,” he says. After he bought his first gun, he says, “I felt grown up. It was like a coming-of-age thing. I felt like an adult.”

Farago talks of the visceral pleasure of firing a gun. There is the moment before, and the moment after. Time slows. It almost stops.

“It’s a Zen thing,” he says. “You can control time down to that 1/1,000th of a second.”

2. Most of us with guns didn't get into them like this nut

He sounds like a nut job looking for an obsession. I wonder which of his 18 guns will "accidentally" go off and hurt someone.

7. Yeah, that's weird...

"I'm going to sell my car blog and look for something new to blog about"

wait, what?

It reminds me of this guy I used to know, who once announced to me that he was "going to find a business to get into." Like, not that he was actually intrinsically interested in anything, just looking for a thing to mark the time with, or check off some box.

5. There's a perfect example of a 2nd Amendment lover!

This is why gun owners will eventually be so marginalized in this country that anyone who wants to be part of normal society will just get rid of them. It may take time but now that gun manufacturers/NRA can't stop the truth about gun violence from coming out we are at the top of the good side slippery slope.

Years ago in my Brother's town, most folks stopped letting their children play in homes with guns. He lives in a highly educated and liberal area so there weren't many guns anyway but people got rid of their guns.

6. It's a God thing. You have the power of life or death over anyone who is near you.

And if you believe Hollywood (and most people apparently believe Hollywood), you have the power of immortality for yourself.

It's a God thing.

Or rather a Playing God thing.

9. you have much better situational awareness without packing a piece.

You don't have the attitude of shooting your way out of trouble. you have more of a tendency to avoid trouble than to go looking for it.

Many, many years ago I learned that when you go looking for trouble, you usually end up finding a lot more trouble that you had intended on finding when you started looking.

this guy is an idiot.

It's a less destructive way to "control time".

What a douche.

12. Before much longer, he'll be itching to use it

to shoot a Bad Guy and be a Hero. He's probably already having such fantasies. We can only hope he doesn't begin seeking out or provoking Bad Guys (real or imaginary) so he'll have an excuse to shoot someone.

14. That guy sounds like the type who shouldn't carry

I'm an advocate for concealed carry, but people -- it's not a talisman. You don't become more aware just by strapping a gun on. Granted, I'm judging him by a Washington post story so who knows how much is edited. I just worry about people who think guns are magic.

15. The guy is a blogger.

He sold a car blog - he is into blogging for the money. Of course he is going to say wild things. He wants hits. Blasting him for gun outrage is picking low hanging fruit.

16. At first I thought "Here we go again"

taking a few statements out of context to paint a picture of a nut.

Nope, said nut is even offering to hold your brushes.
A gun does not:
-give you situational awareness-- it comes from observation
-make you an adult-- you need to be one before you get a gun
-make you a man-- guns are neuter and can be competently operated by either sex
-make you a 'sheepdog'-- it is a sheepdog's job to protect the flock, with humans such job requires more than the hardware
-make you paranoid-- though it may be a symptom

The best quote came from the 9 year old girl
“Is it true that violence isn’t the answer?” he asks.

“Well, it shouldn’t be your first answer,” she says. “If someone’s trying to kill you, yes.”

18. Last time I felt like time slow down...

I was getting chased down by a bunch of navy spec op, army ranger, delta force veterans through the woods for training with real guns loaded with paint bullets and the biggest thing I learned was you don't have time to find cover fast enough and paint bullets leave whelps and bruises the size of baseballs everywhere they hit.

Oh and never be the forward most contact sentry on a vehicle/personnel check point

This dude is a nut job...

19. If It Takes A Gun To Make You Aware Of Your Adulthood....

...do the rest of us a favor and remain an unarmed man-child.

It would be easy to laugh away some pathetic individual like this, except there are tens of thousands of individuals just like him, all over the country. We're going to be dealing with the dark effects of such people for decades to come.
