Dothan School Bus Hostage Update
MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) - Police, SWAT teams and negotiators have surrounded a rural Alabama property where a man is believed to be holed up in an underground shelter after fatally shooting a school bus driver and fleeing with a 6-year-old child.
The standoff started Tuesday afternoon after a gunman boarded the stopped school bus in the small town of Midland City near Dothan. Authorities say the man shot the driver when he refused to let the child off the bus. The 66-year-old driver, Charles Albert Poland Jr., died of multiple gunshots.
Neighbors say the property surrounded by police belongs to Jimmy Lee Dykes. Investigators have not released the suspect's name.
Nothing much new other than the gun owner still seems to be controlling the situation.

7. I nither attempt to dehumaniz him or pity him. The kid did nothing to deserve this.....
If the people on sight can resolve this with words, so much the better.
Would only I had those words I would give them gladly.

9. "Paranoid and combative" said the neighbors.

If he's smart enough to build himself a bunker, he's smart enough to know that the child's welfare is all that's standing between him and the authorities. But the stress on both sides isn't going to get any better the longer this goes on. I hope I'm wrong, but I fear this standoff isn't going to end well.

11. Tactically, What Can the Authorities Do to Resolve This?
If there are LEO's on here who have an idea of what they can do I'd be curious to hear from a professional.
I know they have a negotiator there. But by all reports this guy doesn't sound like he's mentally stable. I'm sure the professional negotiators are trained to deal with that. But the bottom line is his behavior is likely to be unpredictable. Do we know if he's of the type that wants to die for his rights and go out in a blaze of glory as an martyr/example to other "patriots?" That would be bad.
Is that scenario we see all the time on TV where they throw in a "flash-bang" to disorient the criminals so they can storm them and overtake them at all realistic or is it just good TV?
