What's the point of the NRA's list of gun enemies?

Good Lord is This Awesome

Josh Marshall

I just found out that last September the NRA published an official list of gun enemies including the ADA, AMA, ADL, Mel Brooks, Chaka Khan and hundreds of other domestic gun enemies. More after the jump …

The official list is published here. I’ve republished below …

The following organizations have lent monetary, grassroots or some other type of direct support to anti-gun organizations. In many instances, these organizations lent their name in support of specific campaigns to pass anti-gun legislation such as the March 1995 HCI “Campaign to Protect Sane Gun Laws.” Many of these organizations were listed as “Campaign Partners,” for having pledged to fight any efforts to repeal the Brady Act and the Clinton “assault weapons” ban. All have officially endorsed anti-gun positions.

Is it to show just how deranged its leaders are in their thinking?

2. So they can say

"see, patriots- this is what we're up against!"
Closely followed by another plea for money, no doubt.

3. I'll bet a lot of the list hasn't been updated since the Brady era

LaPierre's video game references in his press conference were mostly from the early 1990s. I thought it was just a sign that they are way behind the times and still fighting the battles of the past. Though now that I think about it, perhaps it was an attempt to slightly mitigate the damage done to the gaming demographic by choosing to target video games. Picking games few of today's gamers had ever played might have been a calculated move.

In any event, while perusing the list, I was curious what the hell 'The Synergetic Society' was. You get some hits for 'synergetics,' but nothing about a society. The organization doesn't seem to be around now, or at least not easily google-able, which doesn't sound very synergy-ey to me.

My guess is it hasn't been around for a long time. The list seems just a compendium of whomever they've been pissed off at any one time over many years.

4. Not the first time they've done it

In searching for the list last week, I stumbled upon several links referring to previous such lists.

Here's one from 2003, involving a John Gibson interview on Fox w/ LaPierre (though LaPierre denied it is an "enemy list")

5. I didn't see the link to where I could sign up to get on the list.

On the otherhand, I already belong to about 10 of these organizations.

6. They're just pointing toward the places they want shot up next.

Exercising, or many might say abusing, their First Amendment rights.
