40. Last Saturday night I had the same opportunity

An elderly man asked for some spare change outside a WalMart. I don't carry cash and told him so, and I could see he was disappointed, probably hears that quite a bit. He thanked me anyway, and I thought..

"Not tonight, dude. I'm tired of talking about social safety nets. Tonight, I can be the net"

When I came out, I brought him a bag of stuff - a rotisserie chicken, some rolls, a bag of apples, a quart of OJ, a gallon of water, and a box of chocolate donuts. He cried, told me he hadn't eaten since early the day before, and and then I cried too, mostly because I realized I won't miss the money I spent, and knew I should do more.

I'm going to do it again tomorrow. If I can do it three Saturday's in a row, maybe it will become a weekly habit. Best $15 I ever spent.

It's a start, right?

91. Well Done!

Nothing more to say, really.

Thank you for caring enough to make a difference. Your post was very moving. That poor old man . . . The beautiful, large-souled person that is you . . .

Damn it; this should not be happening! Not in this country, still one of the richest in the world.

Damn the 1% and their bought-and-paid-for Congressional enablers! Damn them all to hell.

If I could push a magic karmic button on my desk and make one of these callous millionaires exchange places for a week with that hungry old man, I'll bet their priorities would change in an instant. Wouldn't hear so much heartless, idiotic and economically wrong-headed blather about "tightening our belts" and "shared sacrifice" and "austerity measures" then, I'll bet.

Good on ya! This tear is for you. And him.

Guess I had more to say after all.

but illustrates an evil, because it is frequently used by people who you want others to sacrifice, so that they get a bigger share.

Thanks for the kind words.

94. What you did was more than just a meal.

The chicken was ate ASAP, The OJ went fast to due to it being perishables. The apples and the water were the big thing. Depending on how many apples were in the bag, that was save back and ate/drank for another meal.

Those chocolate donuts were cool because chocolate is one of the big currencies on the street. He could us that it buy info for, say he needed to find a new sleeping area that night for some reason. He could offer one of those for the info.

So, you did not just feed him that night.

I got the chicken and juice for immediate nutrition. I got the rolls and apples so there's be something the next day, and the donuts...well I didn't think as far ahead as you did. I just wanted to give him something that fulfilled a need above basic sustenance. Something that maybe made him smile a little.

thanks for the props LFR!

19. Not heart warming at all.

This isn't heartwarming. This is not something that should happen more. It WOULD BE if the guys doing the 'prank' PAID for the pizzas (perhaps gone back and reimbursed the pizza store). Instead, they took advantage of a small business owner. I wouldn't want it to happen to me and would not do it to someone else. I like to be the one to decide who to give my hard earned money away to.

So the small business was willing to support the community. Feeding the homeless is supporting the community too.

If it were me (as the small business owner), I'd rather believe that I was being supportive of the community than being deceived. There is no reason to tell the small business person what you've done IMHO.

110. What is it that I said that gives you the impression...

That I don't have faith in humanity.

I just don't see that there was any need bothering the pizza place owner with the fact that the pizza was for the homeless and not actually for police.

If the guy actually gave his credit card number (and it was edited out) it's none of the pizza place owners business.

I was merely commenting on the post from above where someone felt the pizza place owner was deceived.

112. Sorry, I wasn't reading closely.

And it does appear that the pizza place decided to give them the order free. I think the people who are bitching about that just might be on the wrong forum - either way, the pizza place is supporting the community and I agree with you that there was no need to bother the pizza place owner with the actual recipient of their generosity.

39. I'll have to tell you about my experience with some of the homeless in New Orleans...

I was there for a couple of months working the BP spill. The first one I encounter was digging through the trash can across from the hotel. The guy was clutching a banana peel like a treasure. A couple of tourists asked me for directions somewhere and he jumped in. He had a desperate desire to be useful. I asked him to wait and told him I'd get him some food and brought a meal, chips, drinks and a few other small items. He teared up and hustled off. He said he only expected a sandwich.
The second one came after I was released a bit early (I can't follow the hidden scripts and made a couple of someones upset, I think) and had to get rid of about $50 of groceries. I decided I'd give it to the first one that I found who was digging in trash cans. It didn't take long, his name was Ray. He introduced himself and shook my hand and guess what he said he wanted to do with some of the food? He wanted to take it to his kids so he could contribute something for his grandkids.
Honestly some of the panhandlers were agressive and scary, but these guys could drift by with hardly being noticed by anyone. Yet what I still can't get over is how they wanted to be USEFUL. I think it is sad that these guys are shunted out of society because the don't fit the mold of what is desired now by the current corporate business model. Funny how the religious right sticks with the republicans when the bible says over and over not to glean your fields, but leave something for the poor and alien. Yet our country thrives on gleaning every penny at the cost of lives.

gave him more than one meal. When on the street, you stretch out every ounce. You eat the stuff that won't last right then, but anything you can save back, you do.

You could have given him Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Depending on what it was.

He offered, probably knowing that the pizza owner would deliver the pizza for free. I never would have posted my original response had he actually paid for the pizza, or ever when back later and paid for the pizza. It just bothered me that so many people were heaping praise on this prankster like he did something good. He didn't. The owner of the pizza shop did by giving free pizza to two people he thought were undercover police officers working out on a cold night.

89. Moral question: Why should it matter?

The pizza place people offered to give a free pizza. Does it matter that it wasn't really cops? They didn't have to give anyone free food but chose to out of the goodness of their hearts. Does it really matter who got it in the end? They were faithful and did what was morally right, and the guys who called it in were faithful and did good (fed the hungry), and everyone walked away a winner.

116. Honesty and integrity matter

The pranksters were not honest. It was not done for the benefit of the homeless but for their ratings. They prank for a living. If the pizza had been delivered to themselves or their friends, no one would be giving the adoration/ratings that they wanted. If they really wanted to feed the homeless, why not just give them a pizza themselves? Answer: it wouldn't have given them ratings. Who wants to watch THAT video?

57. I don't think so. But I'm not upset about it. If they can deliver a free pizza

to a policeman they should be able to deliver one to a homeless man.

They did not cut out the credit card number. The reason the guy next to him said, "Awesome!" was because they did not have to pay for it. I think the guy ordering the pizza was going to pay for it...(listen to how he says, all humble-like,"Listen...I appreciate that...")

63. I'm not dissing anything. I heard the let me give you my credit card number... I'm saying they

told him not to bother. Sorry, but I disagree. Not dissing the thread. I still think it's awesome, I just don't believe that they paid for it.

64. Here you go...

http://tallahasseeo.com/2013/01/31/pizza-business-that-idolizes-kisses-the-boots-the-police-tricked-into-feeding-the-homeless/

And, again, I still think it's awesome. Because they should want to feed the homeless as much as they want to feed the police. I worked at a store and it was disgusting the way the cops could come in and take whatever they wanted and the down-on-their-lucks were always treated like thieves.

76. Again, I still think it was a shitty thing to do

Guess I am just old fashioned and believe in the golden rule. I try to treat people how I would like to be treated. I would not like to be lied to. I would not like to be con'ed. So, I wouldn't do it to others. And even homeless people have scruples. Many would not appreciate knowing someone was con'ed into give them something for free.

114. Yes and no

Homeless, yes. Hungry, no.
It isn't the 'something for free' (not really sure what you mean) but that the business owner was con-ed into giving free food. The 'Pranksters' were just that, pranksters, not hero's or anyone deserving of any praise. It cost them nothing. As I said before, I try to treat others how I would like to be treated. I would not like to be deceived. I would not like being the recipient of someone's good will gesture if that person that been deceived into giving it.

73. lol

humble isn't the word I would use. It was done for ratings, not because they care one bit about homeless. Otherwise, they would have gone and paid the pizza owner afterwards. It was done for a show.

if the business owner was willing to give the food for free , this isn't really a problem for me.

69. based on a lie

The business owner was willing to give the food for free to two undercover police officers. He may very well have been willing to give it to the homeless. He was never given the choice. He was lied to. And you have to remember, this was all done for ratings.

If it was really about feeding the homeless, they would have gone back and paid the owner of the pizza shop for the pizza. It wasn't. It was about rating and a show.

90. Might be interesting to see if the business had been willing to give a pizza to the

homeless. They might have showed them refusing first - the pranksters assume that they need a cover story to get the business to give the pizza.

If the guy that took the the order talks with the delivery guy and tells them what they were suppose to be. And if the driver is a big mouth and points them out at another time to the wrong person...

To be labeled a narc is a BIG danger on the street.

I even had to go back to my southern draw to keep from that label. My General English I worked so hard on in school was making me stick out like a sore thumb. People were looking at me with suspicion.

So if anyone is going to do this ( some sound like they might), PLEASE pick a different cover story! It could save a life!

Being pointed out as a cop can get you killed, even if you are not one.

Passing yourself as a cop is called impersonating an officer...it's a federal, and very prosecutable, Federal offense.
