Gun owners tend to be male, white, married, living in south: Gallup

Gun owners in the United States tend to be male, white, married and living in the south, according to a study published Friday by Gallup.

Men are three times more likely than women to own a gun, the analysis of surveys of some 6,000 people from 2007 to 2012 found.

About 30 percent of Americans said they personally own a gun, and 14 percent said they live in a household with a gun.

The study found that gun owners were more likely to be: non-Hispanic white rather than blacks or Latinos; married than single; living in the south than the north; over 50 than a youth; and Republicans than Democrats.

Gallup also found that the largest category of gun owners were married men in the south (64 percent of gun owners), followed by white men in the south (61 percent). In last place were single women not in the south (10 percent) just behind non-white women (12 percent).

2. I thought they used harpoons. But as gunners

often tell us, harpoons are just as dangerous as guns. It just takes a little longer.

9. They probably have more teeth than....

...you have brain cells for posting a South-bashing comment.

I've seen more than my share of this type of post bashing the folks who live in the South, but don't worry....you'll be protected since any DU jury will be primarily made up of people who make the same comments and think those comments are just hilarious.

7. Would that be the same Gallop that USA Today fired last week?

Because their polls had turned out to be so absurdly inaccurate?

8. I prefer Pew Research for their surveys/research/reports.

They appear to be more nuanced, honest, and transparent as well as less inclined to promote push polls and spin.

There is much more than these 3 paragraphs at this link:
http://www.people-press.org/2013/01/14/in-gun-control-debate-several-options-draw-majority-support/

Overview

While the issue of gun control remains divisive, there are clear areas of agreement when it comes to a number of gun policy proposals. Fully 85% of Americans favor making private gun sales and sales at gun shows subject to background checks, with comparable support from Republicans, Democrats and independents. Similarly, 80% support laws to prevent mentally ill people from purchasing guns, with broad support across party lines.

But this bipartisan consensus breaks down when it comes to other proposals. Two-thirds of Americans (67%) favor creating a federal database to track gun sales, but there is a wide partisan divide between Democrats (84%) and Republicans (49%). A smaller majority of the public (55%) favors a ban on assault-style weapons; Democrats (69%) also are far more likely than Republicans (44%) to support this. Similar partisan divides exist when it comes to banning high-capacity ammunition clips or the sale of ammunition online.

The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, conducted Jan. 9-13 among 1,502 adults also tested two specific school-safety proposals, with widely different results. By a two-to-one margin (64%-32%), most favor putting armed security guards and police in more schools. But when it comes to more teachers and school officials having guns, most are opposed (40% favor vs. 57% oppose). The latter option is particularly divisive across party lines: 56% of Republicans would like to see more teachers and school officials armed, compared with just 23% of Democrats.
