Apple overtakes Samsung as top U.S. mobile phone vendor

Quick o sages of Wall Street, Cut their stock price again.
_________________________

The estimates from Strategy Analytics' Wireless Device Strategies service saw Apple ship 17.7 million units accounting for a record 34 percent of the market during the three months ending in December, enough to squeeze by Samsung's 32.3 percent share on 16.8 million shipments for the same period. In the fourth quarter of 2011, Apple was estimated to have shipped 12.8 million iPhones compared to Samsung's 13.5 million units.

Until quarter four, Samsung had been the prevailing U.S. market leader since 2008. It should be noted that the numbers account for both smartphones and so-called feature phones.

"Apple has become the number one mobile phone vendor by volume in the United States for the first time ever," said Strategy Analytics Executive Director Neil Mawston. "Apple’s success has been driven by its popular ecosystem of iPhones and App Store, generous carrier subsidies, and extensive marketing around the new iPhone 5 model."

Coming in behind Apple and Samsung was LG, which shipped 4.7 million mobile phones to capture a 9 percent share of the market, slightly down from 6.9 million units and a 14 percent share in 2011.

2. But Apple is doomed because they don't make a TV set!

That appears to be the gist of the "analysts" " arguments. Never mind the great quarter and record sales of iPhone and iPad.

Wonder sometimes if these guys aren't trying to make buying opportunities for themselves, lol.

4. You are far from not alone in your thinking in your last sentence.

It's stock manipulation.

Anyone who doesn't have a damn good reason to sell right now is out of their minds.

3. Evidently iOS is the loser b/c sales of all Android phones are more than that of Apple

Apple is the same in the PC market - largest single manufacturer, but Windows has more total sales via multiple mfrs - doesn't automatically make Windows tops, IMO (I use both, so I don't consider myself a fanboy). They also forget Apple has 60% of the tablet market.

I think Apple shouldn't bother trying to keep up with TV technology. Given how badly hammered the TV market is, it's probably better for Apple to stay out of the TV set market and beef up the Apple TV box they already have, as people are perfectly willing to use that, Roku and other boxes.

I think the next big thing lies elsewhere... s/a putting handsfree Siri in cars, like is already being done, and other technologies. That will be the test of how well Apple will do in the future - emerging devices.

5. I just bought into Apple due to the ridiculously low valuation.

I don't expect the share price to rebound quickly, but that's okay. I don't plan on selling for at least four years, so the price of the stock today is irrelevant to me. The dividend is nice, though. (Small, but more than I could get from a bank.)

Apple continues to make great products, and I suspect they will continue to do so in the future. The huge downward move in the stock reflects the disillusionment of delusional analysts who thought the company would be able to grow profits 40% a year in perpetuity. No one can do that. But they are certainly likely to have a sustained growth rate greater than Microsoft, whose products are all based on legacy systems. And right now, the market is awarding Microsoft a much larger multiple.

Go figure.

6. Back and forth

Samsung will overtake Apple once the furor of iPhone 5 sales level off as they have previously with past releases.

7. I really don't see how that can be possible.

The worst Samsung phone is so much better than the best Apple phone (iPhone 5 :rofl. Seriously, I went from an iPhone 4S to a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 last week and haven't looked back. The Sprint clerk tried selling me an iPhone 5 and I laughed at him.

15. Only for the last quarter

mostly due to iphone5 but Samsung still has the bigger numbers for the year. I expect Apple will lose the lead in sales until 5s(?) is released because it will be the new (not much 'new' in the last several releases) thing. We have a lot of people at work that ask for and receive work iphones when their Blackberry is due for replacement but they only ask for those because it's all they know and about half are very disappointed while the other half love them. As people ask about and look at my GS3 the more that are asking for it or some other Android device, they love the widgets and the fact that they can have a choice of keyboards or other apps (not forced to use what Apple thinks they should).
