Arabic Pledge of Allegiance recitation at Fort Collins school angers some

A Fort Collins high school principal is defending his decision to allow students from a cultural club to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic, and denied that it was in any way, shape or form an attempt to push an Islamic agenda.

...

“These students love this country,” he said. “They were not being un-American in trying to do this. They believed they were accentuating the meaning of the words as spoken regularly in English.”

The school recites the Pledge of Allegiance once a week and on Monday a member of the Cultural Arms Club led the student body in the Arabic version of the pledge.

The club seeks to “destroy the barriers, embrace the cultures” that exist within the high school

I would have to say it was one of my team mates singing "Dancing on the Ceiling" in arabic.

That was hard to take.

11. I see 80 posts on the first page of DU - please tell us all 80 major stories you want covered

or people here allowed to discuss over the water cooler.

I did post about the bombing in turkey - go check and see how many replies it got.

Same with drone attacks and yemen claiming the bombings were theirs, and no one - not even you - replied or discussed that.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022095489

And yet here you are in this thread.

I will wait for the 80 stories you want me to post based on your ideals of what is the most important or interesting to everyone else.

In the mean time I will allow users to decide what stories they like and reply to.

14. Feel free to ignore the DUer who posted that, or ignore the thread.

But you won't win many friends attacking a long-term DUer like TSS and playing forum nanny.

5. F*****n Furriners

Speaking another language is a clear sign of not being 'Murican. Even if what you're speaking is a loyalty pledge to the 'Murican Flag.

6. Oh, FFS.

They're outraged when kids don't say the pledge.
They're outraged when kids do say the pledge, but say another pledge statement afterwards.
They're outraged when kids do say the pledge, but in a different language.
They're just outraged. Period.

10. That's pretty much it.

Makes you wonder if some don't stay up nights thinking up the next outrage du jour.

8. Spanish

I worked in a public school with a majority Hispanics and the pledge was said in both Spanish and English. My guess is these people wouldn't like that either.

13. What's the real wild hair up their ass?

Are they afraid the kids are pledging "One Nation, under Allah"?

16. Yep. They're all eager to point out there's no harm in school prayer or "under god" in the pledge...

...until it that school prayer uses the word "Allah" (which simply means god) or "under Allah." Then, suddenly, they seem to realize that there might be "harm" in putting god in the public schools. Naming "god" in their prayers and pledges at schools isn't any kind of forced conversion of those kids, they insist, but using a foreign word for god from a different religion than theirs is.
