Study: In Almost Every State, The Poor Pay More Of Their Income In Taxes Than The Rich

What kind of country is this?


Here’s a chart of the top 10 worst states. Note that in Washington State, the poor actually pay six times as much of their incomes in taxes as the top 1 percent :

1. Washington doesn't have a state income tax, and this probably reflects

how regressive sales taxes are.

I wonder how many northern states don't have an income tax (I know new hampshire doesn't)

6. There are states you wouldn't think of like Washington, but the others I know of

are Nevada and Idaho...there are very few left.

14. Whereas south of the Columbia here, it's just the opposite.

Here in Oregon, we have no sales tax, but do have an income tax. Not coincidentally, the study named us (along with Vermont) as the "most progressive."

3. I'm D/Ling the report now but will take a wild guess that sales taxes are the main culprit

 

Followed by fuel and tobacco taxes.

17. The minority are mean and ugly

I think that's one of the big lessons of the past election year, if it wasn't obvious before.

"Most people are good" is the pretty basic perspective at the foundation of the Democratic platform, from which other policies flow naturally.

Needless to say - the other party is somewhat on the opposite side of that.

9. This is by design and exacting malice of forethought. The Congress surely realizes this malfeasance

and should ameliorate, rather that exacerbate, the regressiveness/inequity/malfeasance usually present in state tax schemes.

13. The poor and farmers have always got screwed,

in the 60's the highest mark up on cars was on the cheapest cars and the pick up trucks, also the mark up on quality furniture was 10% the mark up on cheap furniture was 400%.
