Gun advocate tells Senate: AR-15 is the ‘weapon of choice’ for women with crying babies

A senior fellow from the conservative Independent Women’s Forum (IWF) on Wednesday told a Senate committee that assault weapons should not be outlawed because they were the “weapon of choice” for young mothers who need a “scary-looking gun.”

At Senate Judiciary Hearing on gun violence, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) asked IWF’s Gayle Trotter, who also writes for The Daily Caller, if it would “disproportionately burden women” to ban assault rifles like the Bushmaster AR-15 used to slaughter 20 children in Newtown, Connecticut.

“Young women are speaking out as to why AR-15 weapons are their weapon of choice,” Trotter explained. “The guns are accurate. They have good handling. They’re light. They’re easy for women to hold.”

She added: “And most importantly, their appearance. An assault weapon in the hands of a young woman defending her babies in her home becomes a defense weapon, and the peace of mind that a woman has as she’s facing three, four, five violent attackers, intruders in her home, with her children screaming in the background, the peace of mind that she has knowing that she has a scary-looking gun gives her more courage when she’s fighting hardened, violent criminals.”

2. Well, that's the theory, I'll grant you that...

...and down here in Texas, a couple of folks have successfully defended themselves against assault and robbery with AKs.

But with Nancy Lanza's example coming to mind, it still gives pause for reflection.

3. "three, four, five violent attackers"

I guess if have a loon like this with posses wandering around "patrolling the border" or "protecting the schools", one would need a defense against that.

These people are masters of projection. Whatever they say others are guilty of or are afraid of, applies to themselves.

6. Sure

http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20130123/NEWS01/301230042?gcheck=1

I mean, nobody knows the rate at which firearms are used defensively without being fired, but it's pretty obviously non-zero.

15. Ummmm...not exactly heart-warming

A burglar with a bb gun was frightened off by a guy with an AR-15. I suspect that if I were armed with a bb gun and had been confronted by a guy with a Glock or a Remington shotgun, I'd be skedaddling just as fast.

This hardly proves your point.

17. Yes, firearms are for the most part equally capable

AR-15's aren't particularly better or worse at defense or offense than other modern weapons, except at some margins.

19. But they can kill first graders like a fucking house on fire...

If you're looking to inflict as much carnage as possible in the short period before you end your miserable existence as the police close in, the AR-15 is your weapon of choice.

20. So can anything else

the AR-15 is your weapon of choice.

People buy it because it's popular (yes, that's circular but things work that way). 20 years ago it was the AK knockoffs. Now it's the M16 knockoff. It's not particularly better at killing a lot of people than any other semi-automatic. Cho killed more people with just a normal pistol.

29. Thing is, I get the feeling that some are not trying to prevent anything at all.

My impression is that all the shootings are being met with a shrug and "things happen".
That a lot of people are saying it is impossible to do anything about the murders, so why even try.
And that those 20 kids are just unfortunate collateral damage. price to pay, etc. So sad.
Wish I felt different.

23. It's not obvious if you don't have statistics to back it up.

Against a guy armed with a BB gun, a loud voice might have done the trick. Still don't see any evidence of what the spokesman from the IWF is claiming -that AR-15s are the weapon of choice for mothers because they're needed to protect their babies.

And where does this 'young women are speaking out' come from? How many women are actively lobbying for AR-15s. We can argue about guns all we want but the statements being made are hogwash.

25. The question posted was has one *ever* been used to save a life

I pointed out that the answer to that is "yes".

I have no idea if the NRA is right about women buying more AR's; since they say it, I'm inclined to doubt it.

How was the AR-15 used to "save a life" if the intruder was armed with a bb gun?

5. How many such situations are After-the-Fact of some other forms of dysfunction, so the gun isn't a

defense at all, but something more like an accessory that may prove to do more harm than good in most instances?

When people ignore their social responsibilities, because they own a gun, someday that gun isn't going to be enough, even though the rest of us are supposed to pretend that they have taken ALL other responsible behavioral measures to deal with whatever the problems are that produce those 4-5 violent attackers they're sooooooooooo worried about (that they haven't in most cases done anything else to prevent that situation and have in some instances even made the kind of decisions that put them more at risk instead of less).

I'd love to see some demographic stats on these women with crying babies we're hearing about here, things such as: how they regard their community responsibilities to others, especially DIFFERENT others; how much they actually know and can process about economic issues and relevant factors such as whatever current war we are involved in wherever; what stressors they themselves are inducing in the systems they are a part of; alcohol, drug use, and arrests; employment histories . . . . Do I sound like a "nazi"? well . . .

Pardon me while I don't give blanket authority for the ultimate violence to just anyone and everyone who claims they "need" it, most of whom, very likely, have not earned that PRIVILEGE and are currently acting very dangerously themselves, like Adam Lanza's mother, waaaaaaaaaaaay after the "horse is already out of the barn".

11. Guess what? When you think anarchy is a good idea, when you think rational regulation of one's

relationships to others is oppressive, when a marriage license degrades someone's "liberty", in business when "getting it on paper" is Big Brother, when children may or may not be the result of something that someone else may or may not refer to as rape and, thus, they become bargaining chips in other kinds of cohort relationships . . . guess what? You just might find yourself in situations in which 4-5 people might be angry at you about something.

being exploited by other exploiters all of the way up to the biggest and most powerful, nation-less, exploiters in the entire world.

They use euphemisms because the truth about themselves is tooooo painful and they are so stupid that they think others can't see it.
