How the NRA Uses Women as Human Shields

How the NRA Uses Women as Human Shields

Gun advocates spent their Wednesday fighting on Capitol Hill for the right of female civilians to carry semi-automatic assault weapons while their compatriots on the right are mourning the decision to allow female soldiers to carry guns on the battlefield. You can see why gun rights advocates would want women to be the face of their issue, because we don't associate women with violence or militias or an obsession with blowing things up. But, at this particular moment, this standard National Rifle Association talking point is crashing into another conservative meme: women aren't fit to fight in combat.

2. Indeed:

Piercing the Myths about Women and Guns

(snip)

Here’s the problem: There’s little if any evidence for the assertion that more women, let alone masses of women, are buying guns. The NRA cites a 2011 Gallup Poll for the claimed increase.

But in fact that poll shows an increase only among women who say there is a gun in their household, not that they own it. And the managing editor of Gallup Poll says that the increase in women with guns is slight and includes many women who already owned guns buying more of them. Nancy Lanza, whose weapon was used in the Newtown school bombing, was probably one of those (she owned five guns).

It turns out that gun lovers tend to buy multiple guns. The editor of Women & Guns magazine says the average subscriber owns seven. The leading scholar-expert on guns in the US, Gary Kleck, who analyzes the best data—that of the General Social Survey—believes there has been no increase at all in gun-owning women.

The gun lobby also relies on claims by the National Sporting Goods Association that target-shooting women increased from 3.3 to 5 million between 2001 and 2011, and women hunters from 1.8 to 2.6 million. But the Association offers no sources for their numbers. The National Shooting Sports Foundation says that 61 percent of gun retailers believe there has been an increase in women buyers. But they have no data either, because they have no way of tracking sales by sex....

3. I guess millions of women gun-owners can't decide for themselves

If they can be armed since mopar has declared the equivalent of "chicks up front!"

28. For those who don't know the "mystery of Mary Rosh".

Back in the late 1998/1999 "she" was outed as Dr. John Lott. He used "her" as a sock puppet to defend his "More Guns, Less Crime" on message boards (like alt.politics.us or alt.history.us) and in op-ed essays whenever he found the biased cherry-picking he called "research" was called into question.

And she - or rather, Dr. Lott - wasn't very good when faced with actual research.
Laz (long-time lurking original Du'er) actually got into a 2-week online research war with "Ms. Mary" in 2000 and beat all her talking points soundly with linking to real FBI and other regional and international crime and firearms event data, and linking to actual online archived historic records and data to back up his analysis when she tried to wiggle into the historical arena. "She" was so flustered from the encounter that if he ever appeared on a USENET cross-posted gun thread, she'd just drop the thread and leave.

31. No it's not because 90+% of Mopars aren't musclecars and they aren't used in mass murders

You're just bitter because the RBKA crowd is being revealed for what it is and you're grasping for straws to try to put a pleasant face on a very sick subculture. And you are stalking me, i don't care but just admit it.

14. You might want to check on things a bit more

I am progressive about many things:
- Womens rights
- GLBT rights
- Education
- Communications and information access
- Taxes and tax laws
- Wealth distribution
- Alternative energy
- Racial equality
- Freedom from religion (and its impacts)
- Reproductive rights
- Privacy
- Self Defense and concealed carry

And that is the short list.

22. Many fake Democrats out there catapulting the propaganda for the ALEC gunwhores

I think these serious "smart" people are in a way more guilty than the troubled whack job trigger pullers. They're like the religious and political leaders who profit from the fear and ignorance of their flock. I doubt that our founding fathers, Jesus or Mohammed would have much use for the Taliban types, here or in Pakistan.

You list MN as you current location. MN is a shall-issue CCW state. Unless you are in a really remote part of the state, there is someone inside a 10 mile radius of you who has a CCW.

12. Sometimes, women have to do combat whether they want to or not.

I'd rather a rapist be killed than a woman be raped.

As for women in battle, I don't see what the problem is so long as the women go through all the same steps as the men to prepare for battle and prove themselves to be as physically and mentally capable as the men. If a woman can't physically do as much as the men, then don't let her in. Ditto with men who can't do it. Otherwise, let her go in and kick butt.

17. And like men, there is still no GOOD reason why they need an AR or AK for self-defense,

simply because if they have unfettered access to them, so does everyone else.

Get rid of ALL of them, and there would no justifiable reason for any of them.

Lots of other choices out there, that would prove quite effective.

BTW, Mopar just doesn't mean classic musclecars or new high tech performance cars like the police use, it is now also modern gas savers like this one.

29. I have all of those and

long hair, custom-made boots, loud guitars and a 30,000 gallon swimming pool that I have never used. I have a house full of art and a cellar full of fine wines.

And that's just for starters.

I do not need any of that stuff, but I like to have it around me. Makes me feel good. As I type this, I am wearing a cuff that was worn by a Turkmen warrior 450+ years ago. It should be in a museum, but I like it on my wrist. It introduces me to interesting people.

I suppose that humans have their own individual, unique wiring.
