1. I suggest you listen to his question

and tell us if anyone answered it or if they merely heckled him.

I am not surprised they finally said something.

6. Fuck that

he didn't challenge anyone. If you can't show a little bit of restraint in this case you fit the bill for someone not mentally capable enough to own a gun.

up and be at least a little bit polite to a guy who's son was butchered by a fucking wacko they should all be kicked in the fucking nuts.

Fuck them and their "oh no it's a bad copy".

5. I think a rhetorical question being answered by assholes shouting

"second amendment, second amendment" like some kind of holy prayer equals HECKLING.

7. Nope...

It was a rhetorical question and the audience was not asked to participate in the hearing. That they would be so callous as to say anything, considering his loss, is simply further proof that some people really do deserve the appellation 'gun nut'

9. yes, taking out that part makes a huge difference

the chair of the committee does react as if it a disturbance, however. The witness challenged the audience, waited for an answer, someone answered, and the chair told them to be quiet. It is odd and the whole thing should be shown.

I'd like to hear someone ask the witness, did you consider those people to be heckling you?

10. I guess I'm torn as to whether sheer stupidity is heckling.

My first reaction is that, no, they weren't heckling in the traditional sense of the word as I perceive it. I did interpret Mr. Heslin as having asked a question and that it wasn't rhetorical, especially when he asked a second time. I have a feeling the pro-gun people who were there weren't aware of the protocol of such hearings.

Their response was ridiculous and small-minded -- it didn't answer the question whatsoever -- though that's typical of people who would even show up to protest Mr. Heslin and other victims.

If video clips are being shown that have edited out Mr. Heslin's question, I think that's disingenuous. People can make their own call as to whether or not it was heckling.

Any rational person would agree the "Second Amendment!!!" shouting was definitely stupid and ignorant.

22. The 1st Amendment allows them to speak

though the rules may have prohibited such, but everyone should heed Mr. Lincoln's advice
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

What kind of answers do you think you're going to get?

I am on the fence. I thought the issue deserved to be aired out with a group of people who's opinions I generally respect.

14. The man had just lost his son in one of the most horrific ways I can imagine any child dying....

....and some ass is going to shout "2nd Amendment" without any shred of compassion for the grieving father? And the author of the article is going to use that as a way to twist the story as it was originally reported?

I'm sorry, but this article deserves nothing more than a rapid dismissal. And so does the author.

15. Here is the authors twitter.

Maybe take up your concerns with Andrew? @AndrewKirell
He is a Mediaite senior editor.
I still think they were repugnant assholes. However, if major media people like Cooper and Morgan are taking a step back, maybe it should be questioned. I was NOT making light of the tragedy in any way.

13. Actually, I'd have to say that the answer to your subject line's question is Yes.

The gun nuts should have been characterized as "proudly unrepentant sociopathic asshole gun nuts." Maybe they should have worked the word "zealots" into it as well.

By being an insensitive asshole and heckling a father who just lost his precious child? Just maybe. But you already knew that didn't you Steve?

23. Note at least some others implied that they wanted to hear

from the "hecklers," and there was a serious question about media ethics, a sound basis for discussing MSM's advocacy role in the gun debate. But you aren't really interested in that, are you?

The game is culture war, and you are a warrior.

25. No I don't

I want all media to be as unbiased as possible. IF Martin Bashir fudged this for ratings or a political point, then he gets no more respect from me than the right wing media who do the same thing. As for the hecklers, I wish someone would show them pictures of the dead children until they cry. Asking legitimate questions about if the media spun this away from reality to get a reaction, any reaction that isn't supported by the actual facts, is not a waste of time. However, Andrew Killlian has sources that have already walked back their comments about what happened at the hearing. Including Anderson Cooper and Piers Morgan. If you have better sources that refute Killian's claims, then by all means bring them forward.

"Cooper’s CNN colleague, Piers Morgan, was also willing to concede the point and issue a correction. After the full video made its rounds, he tweeted, “AN APOLOGY: No, those gun supporters didn't ‘heckle’ Neil Heslin – they just shamed themselves with their disgusting behaviour. My mistake.” Though he did go on to call the gun advocates “repulsive” for answering Helsin’s question with “2nd Amendment rights.”

But so far, those are the only major media outlets to reverse their stance on the “heckling.” Aside from Slate, none of the aforementioned blogs have addressed the “context” problem. David Frum accused his critics of “condoning” the heckling of a grieving father, rather than tackle the question of whether it was heckling in the first place."

So we have dueling claims in the media-sphere. I came to see what people thought about the ideas that something may have been misconstrued. If you think I violated the term of service. Then nail me on it. But I am not taking the post down just b/c people do not like it.
