Alaska Legislator switches party to give Republicans a super majority, Tells Dems to get over it

Rep. Lindsey Holmes, the West Anchorage Democrat turned Republican, says her party switch is a bit like breaking up.

"You have the hurt and anger phase, but I'm hoping we move forward, and it's Alaska first and we're all people first," Holmes said.

In her first extensive interview with the Daily News since she announced Jan. 12 that she was switching parties, Holmes said she remains committed to the same issues that got her elected from District 19 as a Democrat in November. She described herself as a "moderate Democrat" then and a "moderate Republican" now.

But Holmes acknowledged that some of the voters and contributors who supported her as Democrat are angry, and that a few have asked her to return their political contributions. She said she hasn't decided how to handle those requests, which total about $1,000.

2. She should give the money back. I don't think anyone should switch parties until

they decide to run for reelection. I feel that way no matter what party. To tell the people to get over it is an insult.

25. supporters should sue her for their donations back

Currently, she just doesn't know how to return their money.

She might go through the donation list and reverse all the charges....but this is probably too complicated for a peon like me to understand, maybe she has consulted with Goldman Sachs or JP Morgan.

10. It has nothing to do with race.

Our legislature is controlled by oil shills and she wants to fit in.

21. I don't understand your comment.

The fact that our governor and his cronies in the legislature want to give the Big Three oil companies a $2 billion a year tax break doesn't have much to do with race except for the fact that it takes funding away from our public schools and so on. This is purely corporate interests versus people, black, white, Native, whatever. I don't see it as racially motivated at all.

22. And, for what it's worth,

Lindsey Holmes was a student of Professor Obama at the University of Chicago and was positively giddy when he was elected, both times. We have pictures of her at the Democratic National convention in 2008 with her big Obama sign ... All of which points to the probability that she was promised something by someone to entice her to make the switch, maybe some lucrative corporate job after she undoubtedly loses her bid for re-election in 2014 or decides not to run again. I can't think of any other reason why she would defect and give the pubs in the house a supermajority.

7. What is a moderate Alaska Republican?

No abortion unless mother hemorrhaging, repeal all but one tax and not point and laugh when eliminating social programs?

When you're machine-gunning wildlife from a helicopter, you limit yourself to 10 100-round magazines.

23. There are actually a few moderate Republicans in our legislature,

mostly from more rural, seafood-based communities. I'm thinking particularly of Rep. Paul Seaton from Homer and Gary Stevens of Kodiak.

Unfortunately they are outnumbered by the knuckle draggers who want to sign on to any idea that ALEC comes up with. It's pretty funny when they propose stupid bills that have nothing at all to do with Alaska and are right out of the ALEC play book. They think they're being clever and that we're not on to them.

8. District 19 Democrats

(me, for example) will be meeting Thursday night to discuss our options including recall possibilities. It's unconscionable that she did this to one of the few reliably Democratic districts in the state. I've had some continuing correspondence with her since this decision (which i'll be happy to provide you if you're interested) and she swears that she's still the same moderate that she's always been, but I'm not buying it. Did you read that she has hired a staffer from the Romney campaign?

9. I believe the comments to that article

and the others regarding this switch (including letters to the editor) show how unpopular this decision was. I think she can kiss her legislative career goodby, but she's probably got a nice cushy industry job lined up in anticipation of that eventuality.

11. Lindsey has effectly ended her political career.

the repugs will only use her until the next election or until she is recalled. Then she will be primaried and sent packing.

I'm sure they have a nice cushy job for her lined up on the seventh floor of the CP or BP building.

12. The correspondence I've been having with her

is mind-boggling. She seems to think she can be a voice of moderation within her new party and flat-out basically says that Chenault, Lynn, Keller, etc. are crazy. I can't figure out if she's that naive or if she's just lying. I tend to believe the latter.

It seems like it was just her throwing a little hissy fit to spite Kawasaki about that finance committee seat. I'm sure we'll learn more Thursday night.

Anyone who has ever met those guys knows they are republican zombies. You can't reason with them, just smack them in the head with a bat.

17. What she got was a seat on the finance committee.

She was peeved because the Democratic caucus wouldn't give her the committee position she wanted, so she switched parties to get the seat, denying the Democrat from Fairbanks the seat and even moving him out of his office into a smaller one. From what I understand, she has a somewhat poor work ethic, showing up late and taking lots of meaningless "junkets." I've seen lots of snarky comments about her frequent flyer miles since this decision.

Alaskans up here in the main part of the state are at a severe disadvantage because the capital is in Juneau, inaccessible by road, so that it's going to cost at least $500 to go down there and keep an eye on what they're doing. We can't just go and occupy the capital like citizens in other states get to do. Everything in Juneau is done in secret.
