I find it interesting that you think that people from Occupy should not have guns. Are you against liberals/ progressives having weapons? Or are you against the ones that have the guts to go out an protest having the right to bear arms. And finally do you have a problem with people of the left, because your posts seem to point to the fact you do.

I find it troubling the lack of respect that you are showing these people who sometimes put their safety on the line to protest for justice. I find it even worse that a jury kept your post 3-3.

38. Define success

Before Occupy Wall Street it was hard to find real discussion about income inequality outside of left leaning circles. After OWS it became part of the national conversation and helped to sink Mitt Romney and hurt the GOP in general. It might seem like a small victory to some, but as these things actually go it was huge. If they'd shown up armed, they'd all be dead or in prison at this moment and "class warfare" would continue to be a talking point for the right.

3. no...

The world of advertising has proven year after year that the masses do not act on reason; they act on emotion. Read Bernaise or lippman. If people acted on hard data, we would not have a GOP. Taking care of the people is rational. Yet we do not do it. Guns defend me from the irrational among you i.e. th ones who thing this way of life will never end and therefore do not know how to feed themselves if the supermarket does not do it for them.

but if, by some miracle, the vast majority of the population of a country went on a peaceful general strike it could possibly bring down the government. No government can control an entire population at once and of course, the military would be joining with them as well.

are not because of an already armed citizenry.

Plus, the notion that an unarmed citizenry is necessarily under the yoke of a dictatorship is ludicrous. Unless Australia, and England, and almost every other country we can name are dictatorships and somehow I missed that.

Other poster asserted that no Revolution was ever one without guns.

I pointed out that the guns that win Revolutions are mostly not those previously priavetly held by the citizens.

Surely, and clearly, my point was not that every Revolution NEEDS guns. But that was apparent from the start, wasn't it.

Edit: I misread the whole exchange. I thought SheilaT was saying the opposite of what she actually said. Nevermind.

27. True enough

But the threat of force is still persuasive even if it remains unused. Which is one of the reasons why we have never had a military coup in the US (although one was supposedly considered in 1933 to unseat FDR in what is called the Businessmen's plot).

You see, any political leader in the US who sanctioned the use of nuclear weapons against the civilian population would not be a political leader in the US for long.

despotic autocracy ....

the worst I have seen is a bit of an over zealous police that act at the local level .... nothing .. i repeat nothing ..... exists in this country that would allow a national level tyrant to take hold....

The closest has been J.Edgar Hoover ... and the way to tackle that is with laws -- not guns.

...and his eight-year reign of terror (or error, depending on how you look at it) was enough to convince my dear wife (RIP, Ginny), who was a strong supporter of gun-control laws, to concede that in extreme cases, civilians should have access to military firearms so that they would at least have a chance. She would probably still support the proposed Feinstein ban, though.

50. As disastrous his presidency was, on every conceivable level, save humanitarian efforts in Africa...

He also stole the 2000 election .... and I am still burned up about it ....

But I don't see how was his administration was repressive ... the patriot act was misguided - but was there any proof that it was used to target political opponents ? Yes - I hated all the security measures at the airport - but what choice did we have?

Most of all - How did me ( or us) having guns change any of all that .... I don't think that an armed revolt would have been the most effective way to address any of the issue above. Bottom line is that people here are already too suspicious of a strong central authority ( a good thing) for mad man to take the control of our collective destinies .. the conditions for that to come about dont exist my friend .. and that is what most puzzles about the fear of such an outcome ... not plausible !!!
