A 9th grader sent this poem to me tonight (via a friend) - it was her English assignment today, to write an inaugural poem:http://fb.me/21fniSmOe
A Monday Morning: America
As the night sky slowly fades away,
Sleepy faces emerge from their warm homes.
Backpacks, briefcases, busy bees.
Textbooks open, hands raised,
Tomorrows voice is loud today.
Coffee- stained papers,
Money is made,
Only lucky ones are hired.
The dark of night still paints the sky.
People with a purpose,
Oblivious to hopeless eyes,
Eyes paired with cold hands and naked feet.
Begging for breakfast,
Or a helping hand,
To warm the hearts of the ice-cold sidewalks.
Loneliness is a familiar friend that gnaws,
At the dreams of lost souls wandering the streets.
As the sun begins to rest again,
A new, unexpected friend comes along.
A friend that creeps in when we last expect it,
A friend that rests in the pennies, dimes, and dollars in a cup,
A friend that gleams in the eyes of pupils across our nation,
A friend that holds us when a storm ruins the foundation
My friend, your friend, and together as the United States of America,
We welcome our friend
