Father of Newtown victim heckled by gun advocates at legislative hearing

Father of Newtown victim heckled by gun advocates at legislative hearing

Neil Heslin, whose six-year-old son was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School last month, was heckled by gun advocates during a legislative hearing on Monday.

“Changes have to be made,” he told Connecticut lawmakers in an emotional testimony. “I’ll tell you a little bit about Jesse. He was a boy that loved life, lived it to the fullest. His mother and I are separated. He spent equal time with both of us. He was my son, he my buddy, he was my best friend, and I never thought I would be here speaking like this, asking for changes on my son’s behalf.”

“And I never thought I would be laying him to rest. The happiest day of my life was the day he was born. He is my only son, my only family. The worst day of my life was the day when this happened.”

He said firearms like the popular AR-15/M16 rifle were designed to “put a lot of lead out on the battlefield quickly.” When Heslin asked why anyone should be allowed to own a semi-automatic rifle like the one used to kill 26 people in Newtown last month, angry gun advocates shouted, “the Second Amendment!”

Raw Story (http://s.tt/1z4rt)

And the RBKAer's wonder why they have such a despicable image.

1. Gun obsession seems to have replaced their humanity...

Contemptible doesn't begin to describe...

2. That's not actually heckling the guy.

Heckling is mocking or taunting, this was neither.

And how about the other Newtown father that says we have more than enough gun laws as it is?

Slanted reporting, it's not just for wingnuts apparently.

3. You can parse words over the use of "heckling" ...he was speaking , they were not. He asked a

Clearly rhetorical question....they shouted , in a heckling fashion.

As for the other argument...I'm sure he has been called too, just not today. Unless you have lost a 6 yr old son to a shooting rampage, cut this man some fucking slack.

5. He can have all the slack he needs.

I was expecting something to get really pissed off about and then there was nothing. I thought they went all Westboro Baptist on the guy. Instead it was the usual.

7. I just think its kind of over the top.

All this outrage for merely answering the guy's question. I thought they had done something truly reprehensible. Yelling "The Second Amendment!" might be simplistic but it's not an egregious affront to this guy or the kid that was killed.

8. Um yeah, was he engaged in a conversation with them or were these NRA trolls

just behaving like assholes?

Rhetorical question.

11. It wasnt a "question" ...they didn't have the floor. They yelled an unbelievably painful retort to a

Guy wo has just lost his 6 yr old.

No matter what your views on 2Nd Amendment are...this guy deserves respect. Period. No excuses.

13. Good enough.

Did any of the gun nutters get a chance to speak?

That's where I can imagine the real outrageous stuff would happen.

6. More defense of the undefensible, Australia acted, do American have the courage to act?

When Sandy Hook happened some hugged their children, others hugged their guns. Which do we want to be?

9. I'm not defending anyone.

Thats just not heckling is all I'm saying. They didn't mock the guy or his son. It's what a simpleton might do but I don't see why it's disrespectful.

To your other point, this is not Australia. Guns are never going away here, ever. All the sentimentality in the world isn't going to change that.

16. Yes you are, come on admit it, don't be ashamed of standing up for the heckler

We know where you stand.

BTW, the USA is very much like Australia except they drive on a different side of the street.

17. I don't own guns nor do I give a single fuck about guns or gun owners.

You clearly do not "know where I stand".

All I'm saying is that on a strict basis what happened there is not heckling. If that's what they were trying to do, they were doing it wrong.

The Aussies may be somewhat like us but we aren't going to do what they did. It's just not happening here. That's the way it is and not the way I would have it.

Because you are a fellow Clarkie I will not be rude.

Have a good day.

14. I can't imagine--don't want to imagine--his grief

To lose a precious child under such horrific circumstances...

I really get too hot headed about these kinds of affronts. I wanted to say a group of people should have taken these hecklers out and curb stomped them...or at least punched them in the face.

But I won't say that.
