Corpse of Kim Jong-Il Becomes Tourist Attraction

The mausoleum containing the embalmed body of North Korea’s late leader Kim Jong-Il has been opened to tourists, who must follow a strict protocol. Young Pioneer Tours, a five-year-old tour group specializing in off-the-beaten path destinations, was the first group to gain admission when the mausoleum was opened to the public on Jan. 17. Gareth Johnson, managing director and founder of the group, said the tour was planned for January because the country would just be re-opening to tourists. (According to Johnson, North Korea is essentially closed for tourism in December and early January).

“We were hopeful that if we timed it right, the mausoleum would be open and we would gain access,” he said. “It was a combination of great planning and a little luck.” He described the experience as “surreal.” While the other mausoleums he has visited house people he has only read about in history books, this was someone he had seen regularly on the news in his lifetime.

The people on the tour, Johnson said, were “very moved. It was a very intense experience.” And, said Johnson, Kim Jong-Il looks pretty good, considering his state. “He looks like a person,” he said. “Not waxy at all.” All visitors are required to pass through jets of air to cleanse them of dust. Tourists are required to bow at the feet and arms of the dead father and son. However, they are not permitted to bow at the head, as it is considered disrespectful. Cameras and phones are not allowed.

Kim lies in state a few floors below his father, national founder Kim Il Sung, in the Kumsusan mausoleum, the former presidential palace.

Some sort of poetic justice there, I suppose.

6. As he should be - His death was an epic loss to golf fans

Back in 1994, the man set a record that is likely to stand forever. Playing his first round of golf on a regulation, PGA-style, 18-hole course, Kim Jong Il scored 11 holes-in-one while he carded a stunning 38 UNDER par. Seventeen bodyguards were on hand to witness and attest the score. Regarding the 11 holes-in-one on a single round, that feat will only be repeated on putt-putt golf courses as most regulation-sized courses typically have only four holes short enough to reasonably be considered candidates for scoring an ace.

and captured the most joyous occasion.

24. That can't be formaldehyde

They're not wearing gloves, and the vapors from a open vat like that would knock them out within a minute. I assume its some cleaning solution. (geeky observation from an ex-undertaker)

15. OK. So North Korea has Kim Jong Il's embalmed corpse. South Korea has Psy and Gangnam Style.

I think this is one example of capitalism beating communism. Sorry, Hannah Bell!

19. LOL

reminds me of one of my state's largest attractions.."The Garden of Eden" People flock there to pay $2 to look at Dinsmoor's moldy corpse as per his wishes..he lays on a concrete slab containing the body of his first wife..his second wife (like 70 years his junior) bore his son (who may be the only surviving offspring of a civil war veteran iirc)..almost as bizarre as Kim Jong-Il, just on a smaller scale..

The mausoleum is the teepee looking thing behind the house..

29. I almost went there once...

My fiancé and I were taking a "Kansas Trip" (the Space Museum in Hutchinson, the Big Well in Greensburg, Fort Larned...you know: all the "must see" spots in Kansas). We had just visited Nicodemus and were heading for Lucas but missed the turnoff and didn't want to turn back. Thought we would go back some day but haven't. That was 25 years ago.

Is Dinsmoor still on display? I thought I'd read several years ago that his corpse had been taken off display...

31. As far as I know..

I think they closed the mausoleum for a bit a few years ago to scrape some mold off of him..I was there a couple of years ago after they bathed him...still a little murky, but got rid of the cobwebs and he was more visible than the previous time I was there..If you get back to Hutch, the salt mine museum is a 'don't miss' (believe it or not)..

Must be a very strange experience to visit that place. Its a pity they threw Stalin's embalmed body away after a few years.
