Thomas Jefferson Supported Hemp Farming

Thomas Jefferson wrote this journal entry at his home at Monticello in Virginia on December 29, 1815, “Flax is so injurious to our lands, and so scanty produce, that I have never attempted (using) it. Hemp, on the other hand, is abundantly productive and will grow forever on the same spot.” Both he and George Washington advised their countrymen to use hemp for lamp oil and uniform and clothing fabric. Jefferson found it cheaper than cotton cloth and clothed his laborers in hemp. George Washington was said to be more familiar with the plant as a drug. No one knows his reason for saying, “Make the most of the hemp seed, sow it everywhere.”

3. Not the plant, no.

Using a slave owning aristocrat as the poster boy for hemp, however, is another story.

21. Hemp has enormous untapped potential as a cash crop...

Textiles, of course, but IIRC it's an execellent source for bioguels, too.

The Navy wouldn't have been able to operate without hemp ropes and sails.

The current textile industries are helping keep the lid on this. It would be very helpful to get textiles off of the petro based synthetic textiles and back to more natural fibers.

24. As a parent...

We use cloth diapers and I like to use more natural fibers rather than fleece and microfiber and hemp is a great material. It's very absorbent. It allows you to use thinner material while still being super absorbent (compared to microfiber which would need to be thick and bulky to match the absorbancy). I do believe it has natural anti-microbial properties as well. My daughter has super sensitive skin so using hemp is a bonus because it doesn't irritate her in any way. The only downside is that it takes longer to dry than any other diaper material I have used (cotton, bamboo, fleece, microfiber...).

Just thought I'd share.

35. There's an effort to legalize hemp production in KY

Comer (ag commissioner) is a republican and I have been irritated with him for the most part. But I do agree that hemp would be a good thing for the state so I hope it goes through. It seems like the federal government would adjust their policies on this if enough states embrace it but maybe that's wishful thinking.
