Democrats Launch Plan to Make Texas a Swing State

National Democrats "are taking steps to create a large-scale independent group aimed at turning traditionally conservative Texas into a prime electoral battleground, crafting a new initiative to identify and mobilize progressive voters in the rapidly-changing state," Politico reports.

"The organization, dubbed 'Battleground Texas,' plans to engage the state's rapidly growing Latino population, as well as African-American voters and other Democratic-leaning constituencies that have been underrepresented at the ballot box in recent cycles. Two sources said the contemplated budget would run into the tens of millions of dollars over several years - a project Democrats hope has enough heft to help turn what has long been an electoral pipe dream into reality."

5. To be successful, it'll have to do more than appeal to nonwhite voters

The Promesa Project was supposed to energize Hispanic voters in Texas to vote Democratic. Judging by the results of the 2012 elections, Promesa's effectiveness is in some doubt.

The Texas Democratic Party was weakened by internal differences over the civil rights movement of the 1960s and the rise of the "Reagan Democrats" (in other words, new Republicans). There needs to be a renewed effort to connect with rural Texas voters, many of whom are white and conservative, in order to help them appreciate the overall Democratic vision. Otherwise, we'll be stuck with more Louie Gohmerts in Congress.

7. Every state should have such a program.

We can change things, if we have the will to do so.

9. This is VERY possible. And with 38 EC votes the GOP may never win another Presidency again.

10. This is a great plan! A HUGE electoral vote! TX used to be Democratic. It can happen.

The voters MUST be made to realize that voting in off-year elections is CRITICAL. Electing Dems to governorship & state offices is critical! Even judges.
