Most parents 'lie to their children'

By Sean Coughlan

The most frequent example was parents threatening to leave children alone in public unless they behaved.

Persuasion ranged from invoking the support of the tooth fairy to telling children they would go blind unless they ate particular vegetables.

Another strategic example was: "That was beautiful piano playing."

The study, published in the International Journal of Psychology, examined the use of "instrumental lying" - and found that such tactically-deployed falsehoods were used by an overwhelming majority of parents in both the United States and China - based on interviews with about 200 families.

1. It isn't right if the lies scare their children.

However, the lies that give children emotional support while they're growing is really okay.

3. I would imagine that most children lie to their parents, as well.

I know I did.

5. Macaroni grows on trees

There are various lies, coercive lies to make the child do as parent wants (holy trinity of threats, blackmail and bribes). Another kind of lie, I was told by my mother e.g. that macaroni grows on macaroni trees. When I found out that that was not actually true, it was very embarrassing. Only much later I realized that our tribal ancestral custom of telling gullible children (and other people too) lies to embarrass them is very beneficial as it very effectively teaches critical thinking and not to blindly believe what any authority says.

6. The biggest lie is "behave or you are going to Hell".

Threatening a little kid with eternal damnation is child abuse, IMO.
