India stops tourists from taking 'human safaris' to watch, "ogle" & "throw food" at Jarawa tribe.

India stops 'human safaris' of Jarawa tribe
India's Supreme Court has moved to stop tourists taking 'human safaris' to watch the Andaman Islands' Jarawa tribe in their native forests.

The Jarawa are one of the world's most isolated populations for whom common Western infections can be fatal.

Its decision follows condemnation of the Indian government last year over the emergence of a video which showed a policeman luring a semi-naked Jarawa woman to dance for tourists in exchange for food.

The video highlighted the exploitation of the Jarawa who are believed to be one of the first peoples to move to Asia from Africa thousands of years ago.

For much of that time they have lived in complete isolation from the outside world but they have come under increasing scrutiny in recent years as tourism has taken off in the Indian Ocean islands.

A trunk road used by tour operators to take visitors to coastal caves has become an observation point for Westerners to watch and film the tribe's people in their native forest.

“We are delighted by the news. It is an interim order and we would love it to become permanent. This decision bans tourists, which we’ve been calling for for years. Every day there are many convoys going through, ogle them, throw food. The contact they’ve had with the outside world is small and recent, so they’re incredible vulnerable to diseases and exploitation. It is a horrible, degrading situation and this decision is the first step to them getting back in control of their lives and resources,” said Sohpie Grigg of the campaign group Survival International.

5. Confession time

......... I have been running bus tours to KY to see the Paul clan in its natural surroundings - we throw tea bags and tea pots at them.

(Seriously, it is good that India has taken this step, but sad they had to.)

6. Over-due.

Believe it or not: there's still one island in the Andaman archipelago where the tribes people have not been exposed to our decrepit society: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1229149
