DEAD LAST FOX "News" Is The Biggest Ratings Loser On Inauguration Day-& The Future Looks Even Dimmer

Fox News Is The Biggest Ratings Loser On Inauguration Day - And The Future Looks Even Dimmer
by News Corpse
for Media Watch

CNN led during the President's address with 3.1 million total viewers. MSNBC came in second with 2.3 million. Fox was dead last with 1.3 million. In the critical 25-54 year old demographic the numbers for Fox were even more dismal: CNN had 1.1 million in the demo. MSNBC had 706,000. Trailing significantly was Fox News with only 294,000, which was less than half of MSNBC and just over a quarter of CNN.

........

What's most startling in the ratings data is the relative disparities between the networks and their declines. Fox News was off a jaw-dropping 75% (82% demo) from 2009. CNN sunk a hefty 61% (67% demo). MSNBC, by comparison did fairly well with a mere 25% decline (37% demo). Digging deeper, these numbers tell us something that is even more foreboding for Fox. The percentage of their audience composed of the lucrative younger demos falls way below that of their competitors. CNN's demo audience was 35% of their total viewers. MSNBC has 31% in the demo. But only 22% of Fox's viewers are 25-54 years old.

That means that the next generation of news consumers is avoiding the severely conservative channel in droves. What's more, MSNBC's primetime anchors Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell were number one in their time slots for 2012 in the 18-34 demo. MSNBC has also led in African-American and Latino viewers. So by every measure MSNBC is positioned for future gains, while Fox is bracing for the bottom to fall out.

These numbers are not merely tabulated for bragging rights. They represent the potential for ad revenue. As the numbers fall, so do Fox's profits. And with their dearth of the desirable youth demos, the advertising Fox maintains will command lower rates.

To top it off, Fox is actually advertising their own unpopularity. Yesterday an article on Fox Nation beamed that "Viewership of Obama's 2nd Inauguration Plunges." It's one of those rare occasions when Fox Nation posted something that was true.

3. Maybe we Americans aren't quite as stupid as some would like to believe

Maybe we aren't quite as dumb as a few folks think we are, including a few in here. It sounds like people are just getting fed up with all the bs fox spews every day. And that's good.

4. I think a big factor is that since FOX self-selected for blinkered-conservative viewers...

...it's not surprising they came in last for covering the inaugural. He's "not their president", so it's no surprise a lot of their audience wouldn't be interested in watching.

5. Well ...

in all fairness, one could anticipate that a networks whose audience HATES all things (President) Obama would have scant viewership of President Obama's second Inauguration.

They can tune into beck or rush to get their outraged talking points, without having to actually watch the PRESIDENT (again).

But the other indicators do point to the death of a media giant. Which I find quite amusing, since they claim to worship at the alter of "the market" ... and "the market" is speaking quite loudly.

6. Faux Snooze will always be subsidized by the RNC even when they operate deep in the red.

The RNC must have their Propaganda Ministry broadcasting lies and misinformation 24/7
in order to keep the willfully ignorant brainless zombies feeding at the GOP** trough.

7. Fox's coverage was boring and biased against the president, so this is no big surprise that

people did not watch them.

8. This doesn't surprise me since the vast amount of their viewers consist of birthers,

and other RW nutjob types. They didn't want to watch it.

I'm surprised that anyone would be surprised by it.

9. Don't know if Faux losing viewers is good or bad

On one hand its great to see them in the sewer where they belong & hopefully it will cause owners/shareholders/advertisers to pause.

On the other hand, will it cause them to go even more radical batshit crazy in an attempt to pump up their base & dig further into the anti-intellectual swamp they find their material from?

10. Seems the network goes the way of the Tea Party craze? That crowd in DC didn't look much like Fox

viewers. The new, emerging demographic ... young, female, multi-racial, LGBT friendly ... definitely not O'Reilly and Hannity, et al.

11. Of course their numbers were bad for their inauguration coverage.

The typical Faux Noise viewer probably didn't want to watch the second inauguration of the Kenyan-Indonesian-Muslim-atheist-communist-Nazi-fake President so they didn't tune in at all. Even so, it's obvious that their demographic is gradually dying off.

13. All this proves is that Fox News fans are a bunch of sore losers.

I watched both the Bush inaugurals. And even though I thought he was a complete dumbass, there were moments of the inaugural I actually enjoyed - because, you know, it's our country...
