We had an "Inaugural" grandbaby yesterday evening!

Last edited Tue Jan 22, 2013, 05:26 PM - Edit history (1)

He's a big boy, 8.9 lbs, 22 inches, with big hands and big feet and a mop of dark hair on his head!

No name had been decided on beforehand (my son and d.i.l. wanted to "meet the baby" first before making the final decision). Now they are considering the historical significance as well.

Waiting impatiently to hear the final decision...

Two of my granddaughters are the same age as Malia and Sasha, so I have a real soft spot in my heart for them (who doesn't?)...

24. She is 7 yrs old on the 25th of Dec. A christmas baby. Poor thing wanted to come over today.

But her momma is taking her to the doctor and bring her home. I am making a her a hot pot of soup my mother use to fix during WWII. You take bag of carrots peel them and chop them up in small bits. Also take a whole celery stock and do the same. Take a white onion peel the outside and put it in a pot whole along with the carrots and celery. Take a pack of stew meat and put it in the pot also. Then fill the pot with water and a 2 tbsp of oil in the water. Also open up one can (large) of tomato paste. Put it in the water and stir till it blends into the water. Cook it slow and easy till the veggies are done and the meat is done. OMG it is so good on a cold day and I swear it really helps when you have a cold. I also cook elbow macaroni or the small sea shell Moroni. Drain the pasta then when the soup is finish put the soup in the bowl of pasta and top it off with Parmesan cheese. Sometime I just fill a cup and put the cheese in it and it melts and eat it like that. OMG died and gone to heaven. You can make a big pot of soup and it is cheap and it serves allot of people. I know she will eat that when she feels sick. She can keep it down. Try it you'll like it. Healthy, cheap meal.

Have they given the baby a name yet?

39. Well let us know. Your welcome. It really is good on a cold day. Oh I forgot

to tell you when I make it for my son and his family I cut the celery and carrots in half leaving them in big chunks because they don't like to eat the veggie but love the flavor. So I drain the soup in a strainer til all I have left is the juice. Then I pull the stew meat out of it and put it in the juice. When I was young I hated the veggies also. But after I got married and my husband said save me the veggies so I decided to taste them and I like them also and now I eat them also. But it still good. Oh I don't like to eat the onion.

minestrone much. As I have to tell you I don't eat allot of spicy foods. My stomach can't take it. My mother never cooked spicy for us because we wouldn't eat it. I like my food mild to sweet. I tried it I just didn't care for it.

57. Hi gateley, well I like the flavor of onion but I don't like to eat it. I throw it away.

But the rest of the veggies I chop up and serve it up for my husband and I. Honestly its a cheap meal and taste great. Try it I bet you'll like it. I cook it on low the whole day. It smells so good around the kitchen with all those flavors. Yes it is very simple. Even my 7 yr old granddaughter helps me make it.

64. i do like onion, so that's what I'll do --thanks! I'm thinking about getting a slow cooker

(because of the simplicity of dumping everything in then walking away for 8 hours) and this sounds like it might be a candidate for that. Even if not, the all day in the pot method certainly is do-able. I'm really excited to try it so it won't be too long. I'll let you know! Thanks again!

that goes up to 10 hours and then it goes to warm by itself. I make my pasta sauce with it. I put it on at night and the meat fall apart. OMG it's so gooooooooooood. Now I don't know how the soup will go. Let me know. By the way I got up this morning and put my pot on the stove and its cooking now. It smells soooooooooo good. If you have a problem just send me a DU email and I will walk you through it. OK

67. I don't -- For years I've just bought prepared stuff or something I could just do easily

(bacon, eggs, things that didn't require timing, preparation, etc.), but now I want to eat better, to feel better, and to stop being so wasteful.

A crockpot is one of the things on my list I'll be getting soon. I saw a great recipe for coconut pork which is what got me thinking about it, the "hey, even I could do that!" and then started looking at other recipes for slow cookers. I can't think of anything easier!

My mom wasn't the best cook, but she said "if you can read you can cook". I'd read a recipe and feel overwhelmed. Even easy things. I decided a while ago to "whip up" sausage gravy biscuits. I had sausage, picked up country gravy MIX at the store, and bakery made buttermilk biscuits (at least I didn't get the Pillsbury kind ). By the end of this ORDEAL I was a wreck! The timing of getting everything done at once (3 whole steps!) PLUS getting my coffee to come out at the same time, I thought NEVER AGAIN! But with a crock pot I don't have to coordinate different stages of preparation, so as I said, it's on my list!!

PS -- and thanks for the offer of help! Knowing me, a question might arise and you'll see me in your mailbox. I'm truly clueless which is why I asked about the onion. Instead of thinking "I like onion so I'll cut mine into pieces" I feared there was something MAGICAL about keeping it whole during the cooking. See? Ask any of my friends -- I'm not exaggerating one whit!

68. Get a big crockpot. When you get it I will give you my receipe for Italian pasta sauce

cooked in a crockpot. Make sure you buy the kind that last a long time and then goes to simmer or warm or turns off by itself. Good Luck with it. Remember when you make the soup its the bases of veggies. You can also put in other veggies. Whatever you like. By the way crescent rolls are so good and you can do so many different easy things with them. I'll tell you sometime if you want.

69. I was eyeing a 3.5 qt -- it's only me and I don't have the room (or inclination)

to freeze stuff I can't eat right away. Is there another reason to get a huge one other than that? I've already figured I'd have to downsize recipes, but that's do-able.

The kitchen is so small you hardly can move. I know my house is less than 1000 sq ft. You can put an apartment in my house. But you can deal with your size apartment.

79. Yes I live in an apartment, but have actually lived in places with

smaller kitchens. Maybe that's why I HATE having stuff on the counter -- Right now I have a juicer and I' even giving that the evil eye. I hate having to move everything off a counter to clean it, then move it all back again. I even keep my paper towels in a cupboard -- don't want the paper towel holder on the counter! Extreme, I know, but that's how it's gotta be for my piece of mind. I DO have cupboard space for a smaller crockpot, probably a larger one, to be honest, but then that's heavier and more difficult to clean in my small -- and shallow -- sink.

I'm really putting up a fight, aren't I?

I do understand where you're coming from and I am giving it some consideration -- really!

44. Thanks! His parents are HUGE NYC Liberals!

Our family get togethers are almost tribal events! We are a solid Democratic group...so this birth on this day was very, very special to all of us...the whole family...it's all so good!

Funnily enough, it was my first suggestion when they told me they were pregnant...if I do say so myself...

75. thanks. we're all progressives here and it's GOOD!

Now, does anybody here know how to download a cellphone photo from Facebook to DU?

I tried to post a pic of little Jack thru using my usual tinypic.com but they said the photos were "invalid format" and I couldn't upload to My Picture file (as with Google). Does anyone know how I can do this?
