Republican Official Hangs Upside Down American Flag In Protest Of Obama’s Inauguration

Republican Official Hangs Upside Down American Flag In Protest Of Obama’s Inauguration

By Adam Peck

The head of the Mon Valley Republican Committee in Pennsylvania is facing backlash from his local community after displaying an American flag upside down — a statement usually meant as a distress signal by soldiers in times of war — during President Obama’s second inauguration ceremony. The flag was placed outside the Mon Valley Republican Party’s meeting spot on the main road in McKeesport, Pennsylvania.

Brent Kovac, the head of the local Republican chapter, spoke to local TV news station WPXI:

Channel 11′s Julie Fine talked to the man behind the flag. He said that he doesn’t “regret it at all” because “our nation is in a horrible place.”

“I think some people that didn’t know why the flag was flying upside down might find out, and some people that didn’t agree with it might’ve talked to some people who agreed with it,” Brent Kovac said.

The news station says it spoke with many people who saw the flag, and a lot of them said they didn’t believe the statement was appropriate.

Since Obama was reelected in November, upside down flags have become a favorite of far-right tea party types. Others have engaged in a more direct expression of their displeasure with Obama, hanging empty chairs — as popularized by Clint Eastwood’s memorable Republican National Convention speech — in effigy.

The President's re-election is driving them more nuts.

2. more nuts?

When Bush was President, many on the left were fond of displaying upside down flags.

I remember there was one at the Bush protest that I went to in Manhattan, Kansas in early 2005 I think it was. I had to explain to somebody there that it was a distress signal. Many people do not know that, and they think it is just "disrepecting the flag". And they think that disrespect is not appropriate.

And no, I was not the one with the upside down flag in Manhattan. My own sign only said "boo".

6. I don't get it? Are

"When Bush was President, many on the left were fond of displaying upside down flags. "

...you saying the left's opposition to Bush was nuts?

"I had to explain to somebody there that it was a distress signal."

In terms of Bush, wasn't that over an illegal war and sanctioned torture? What do you think the RW nuts are distressed about?

9. I was just thinking of that!

DU had an upside down flag icon and many of used it after Shrub was re-elected. Can't bitch about them doing it when we did it ourselves!

10. It's a false equivalency.

"DU had an upside down flag icon and many of used it after Shrub was re-elected. Can't bitch about them doing it when we did it ourselves! "

That's like claiming that crazy is a justifiable response when it's based on lunatic assumptions.

What are they in distress about?

Bush started an illegal war and sanctioned torture.

The problem isn't the symbolism of the upside down flag, the problem is trying to figure out what distress it's supposed to symbolize?

Do you think flying the flag upside down in protest to a black President is justifiable?

11. It's not false equivalency to them

We know they're batshit but they don't. They honestly believe the country is going down the tubes because of Barack Obama. Just as we thought the country was circling the bowl with Shrub. You know that.

14. Again

"We know they're batshit but they don't. They honestly believe the country is going down the tubes because of Barack Obama."

...lunacy is not an excuse, which makes it a false equivalency.

That's like equating protest of an illegal war to protest of a black President.

4. The danger of crying "wolf."

First of all, hanging the flag upside down is a signal of distress. But how could a rich Republican be in distress following the bush years of extremely low taxes and mega defense contracts? Someone ought to do something to this monster to bring him real distress.

5. The disrespect of President Obama continues

It's not as if President Obama had the Supreme Court appoint him to office, started wars based on lies, cut deals for his wealthy base, ruined the economy, and generally embarrassed the country around the world...

No, he's actually trying to do things that might *help* people, instead. Bottom line, I believe the big problem for these people is the color of President Obama's skin, and I think that goes from the bottom of the right wing chain to the very top of it in Congress. None of them care if they wreck the country, they will allow their racism to rule their actions.

12. Isn't there a difference between

an elected official hanging the flag upside down and a protester hanging the flag upside down. Now, if he did this at his house I wouldn't care. He has the right to have a protest at his house. Not so much at a tax payer paid office. But, then again I might be wrong, maybe he has just as much right to do this on tax payer dollars.
