Is it true Obama will get no secret service protection after leaving office?

Someone said that W was the last President to get lifetime secret service protection. Ummm...I think that clearly there needs to be an exception if this is true. I had that anxious feeling when he was giving his inaugural address and while he was walking during the parade.

6. Really? That fact has not made it to the Secret Service website.

ON EDIT: I see that Obama signed legislation about 10 days ago reinstating lifetime protection.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Secret_Service

And we used to sneer at wikipedia as a source of information...

8. No. The repukes pushed through a bill a few years ago that cut it to 10 years for former presidents.

But Obama just recently signed a bill that restored full lifetime protection to all former presidents.

I always felt that the repukes did that so they could more easily assassinate our former Democratic presidents. It was just pure meanness. Now things have been set right again.

Dubya will drink himself to death so I am not worried about him. Obama I WOULD have worried about.

Glad he will have lifetime protection. Thought it was pretty ridiculous that they were only going to give him 10 years. That seems insane.

12. Just watch

He'll be Secretary of State or a similar position in a few years.

We will not see the last of this man for a long time, or at least I hope so.

This is the first president in my lifetime that is younger than me.

I need him to stick around.

31. SCOTUS is more likely than becoming a cabinet member under another President.

Look at Taft--he made the transition to SCOTUS. But working for a newbie when you had the job that newbie is trying to learn for eight years? And having to do what that person says even though you "know" you have a better way?

It just does not work. Better to play elder statesman and give advice.

It's one thing to be an ultimate arbiter on the highest court in the land, answering to no one save yourself and history, it's another thing to be taking direction from a whippersnapper.

22. He will not be in someone's cabinet

It is literally unimaginable for anyone to go from running the whole show to being one of the cabinet. Now it would be interesting if he did what a couple of former Presidents have done, John Quincy Adams got elected to the House, while Andrew Johnson was appointed to the US Senate as former Presidents. Obama will be a young ex president but he will actually be older upon leaving office than Clinton was (55 vs 54). Carter was 56. I think he will have an active ex presidency but no cabinet offices for him.

24. Not too sure about that.

He garners great affection and respect the world over.

This fact is not lost on any politician with a brain.

He has broken new ground by being elected twice. What's to stop him from breaking more new ground?

26. No. Whatever the rule was earlier,

and I'm not sure of it, PrezO recently authorized/required that all Presidents have life-long Secret Service protection. (There was a DU kerfuffle about it.)

29. They changed the rule back again.

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/obama-signs-law-giving-himself-bush-lifetime-secret-184305122--politics.html

President Barack Obama on Thursday signed into a law a measure giving him, George W. Bush and future former presidents and their spouses lifetime Secret Service protection, the White House announced.
The legislation, crafted by Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, rolls back a mid-1990s law that imposed a 10-year limit on Secret Service protection for former presidents. Bush would have been the first former commander in chief affected.
At the time, lawmakers who supported the measure said it would save the government millions of dollars. They also argued that former presidents could hire private security firms (as Richard Nixon did after he decided to forgo Secret Service protection in 1985).
The bill had sailed through Congress with bipartisan support—it cleared the House of Representatives by voice vote in early December, and then it zipped through the Senate unopposed. The law also provides protection for former presidents’ kids until age 16. But “protection of a spouse shall terminate in the event of remarriage.”

It's a different world these days.
