1. Is that what they think is meant by Stonewall?

Stonewall was a bar in Greenwich Village.

There were riots there:

2. I know that.

I'm gay and have known about it since the '60s. Thank you very much.

I have no idea what everybody thinks, but I'll bet some do. And not in just the South.

11. I got it.

And I'm not gay and live in Alabama. Then again, I'm not humor impaired. Good one.

10. What happened is the cops rousted the place one too many times, and the 60s being the 60s, the

patrons took it to the streets and kicked some NYPD ass. There were a series of confrontations and skirmishes in the largely gay Christopher Street neighborhood of Greenwich Village that followed. That went a long way to wipe away the submissive "sissy" image of gays and became a rallying point for the movement.

It's often referred to as the Stonewall Riots, but it was really more a matter of giving back in the spirit it was received.

15. And the riots are named after the Stonewall Inn, which is still there.

There seemed to be some confusion as to the history of the term, "Stonewall".

I think the OP was snarking, but I'll bet DU has some members and readers, especially younger ones, who may never have read of it.

The original sign is gone but the Inn is still there, though I haven't visited in years.

6. I was born and raised in the South and

have lived here most of my life. Stonewall definitely has a prior meaning here. I'm poking fun at myself and others.
I'll bet many in the US are clueless about it period.

13. grits same as polenta

Today in may places in the south it is Lee, Jackson, King Day.

The only way to get many states in the south to approve of the MLK holiday was to add the names of 2 southern heroes who fought to keep people as property.

The south is disgusting place if you ask me I will never go back.

19. I have a problem with it

among other problems. One is people acting like nobody else in America has backward racist views. We know they are around and many have been fighting them for years. Others could do with looking around their own backyards.

21. You must think your opinion is very important.....

What else would explain your childish need to call the region where no less than three people on this thread live "disgusting". I find your rudeness and insensitivity disgusting. By all means, stay away. We have more than our share of intolerant bigots down here. I hope you took that broad brush you use to paint everyone south of the Mason Dixon line with you.

23. Grits...

I am a displaced Buckeye (have been in Texas 20 years). The major northern cities do tend to be more tolerant than a lot of the south. Once you get out in the rural areas, they are every bit as bad as racist southerners. This "southerners are stupid, racist hicks" attitude that some espouse does get tiresome.

On edit: I wasn't aiming at the OP, which was just good natured ribbing. I was talking about the "everyone in the south is nasty" person you were responding to.
