Depressed, aloof and it was obvious she preferred to be elsewhere.

Just in case someone got the wrong idea: I thought she was very good and she practically bounced off the stage.

artist.
so if you want to pick a popular singer with wide appeal throughout the whole country Kelly Clarkson is the one to pick.

22. I thought she was a Ron Paul supporter?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/29/kelly-clarkson-endorses-ron-paul-twitter-hate_n_1174612.html

The first "American Idol" has announced who she wants to be the next American president. Her choice isn't helping her approval ratings.

"I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance," Kelly Clarkson wrote on Twitter and WhoSay on Wednesday. "If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he's got my vote. Too bad he probably won't."

Like Paul, Clarkson hails from Texas. And like Paul, Clarkson is a fan of limited government. But given her status as a pop star, she caught a lot of criticism from fans who were enraged over Clarkson's endorsement amidst the ongoing controversy over racist and homophobic newsletters that were sent out under Paul's name in the 80s.

Addressing the criticism, Clarkson later tweeted:

"I am really sorry if I have offended anyone. Obviously that was not my intent. I do not support racism. I support gay rights, straight rights, women's rights, men's rights, white/black/purple/orange rights. I like Ron Paul because he believes in less government and letting the people (all of us) make the decisions and mold our country. That is all. Out of all of the Republican nominees, he's my favorite."

If you compare her to Beyonce you can hear the difference. Beyonce started with a simple arrangement and hit the notes beautifully then later did a little bit of runs.

104. Really?

Yeah, they want a star to move their brand. However, Clarkson has had some major differences with her label. She wasn't afraid to cross them and that is rare.

She is talented and she is not a drone. Kelly would be the first to tell you she isn't Aretha. Nobody is and I think a lot of people are comparing in their heads.

Beyonce did a great job, but nobody is hopping around because she isn't Whitney. She made it her own.

Kelly got there in an unusual way. That does not diminish her. She can only be diminished in small minds.

116. 100% wrong

I am not a fun of belters and "runners" like Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce, but they are both very similar singers and both very good singers.

She isn't fake, and she isn't a no talent.

It's one thing to not care much for her type of music (which I don't, and neither do I care for Beyonce's music), but it's another to say someone isn't talented when they are. She, like Ms. Knowles, made it on TALENT. Clarkson is also known for having pnwed the system and gotten out of her draconian contract with AI, and for refusing to "play the game" in the industry. The latter caused her a significant career setback.

I don;t buy her CDs, but I give her props, and she was great yesterday. What is throwing some people, I think, is both the nontraditional arrangement and the very traditional Marine Corps Band backup.

I hate it when people try to sing the National Anthem or other (patriotic) songs & instead of singing they yell/scream.

Whitney Houston's "I will always live you" ( obviously not a "patriotic song" but, as an example) comes to mind - trying to portray drama/gravity all she did was bellow at the top of her lungs and the song is unbearable to listen to.

Singing in that weather isn't exactly conducive to facial expressions. She also sang a nonstandard version.

Her first choice was Paul. But she said publicly she couldn't support Romney because of his position on same sex marriage.

I'm not a fan of her music, but I thought she did fine. And I'm sort of embarrassed by the DUers who seem to base their judgments on a performer on what they think the performer's politics are, even when they actually don't know what the performer's politics are.

102. As a fan of Kelly Clarkson ....

I have to say that it wasn't her best performance ever, but she was nervous. She normally sings 10 times better than that. She doesn't usually get nervous but she does when performing at a big special event, things such as the Superbowl and singing for the Pope and of course today. I think it's a bit harsh to say she was horrible. You want to hear horrible? Watch the American Idol auditions for horrible. Singers, who are human after all, aren't always going to sing perfectly. Nerves, climate and illness can be factors. I know how she looks when she's genuinely nervous and she was today. Trust me, if she had not wanted to be there, she wouldn't have been. Her own record label would even tell you that she doesn't do anything she does not want to do.

She voted for Obama twice so all this hate thrown at her is also harsh. She claims to be a republican, but lately it sounds like she might be evolving. You can't seriously tell me that nobody here changed parties at some point. Yes, there are many lifelong liberals here, but some came from the other side because their perspectives changed - it happens a lot as people get older. When someone might be going through the transformation we should be supporting them, not be hateful to them in the process. Being hateful accomplishes nothing good.

112. She was wonderful. That's the hardest gig imaginable for so many reasons. I've seen artists I like

more mess up worse at inaugurals. To criticize a performer in that context, I'd have to both despise the artist deeply and they'd have to botch the work completely and I mean completely. Clarkson did just fine. Beyonce ripped the place to shreds and took no prisoners, one of the best versions of the anthem ever. James Taylor, always so sweet...

Whiny, nasal and sounding country. Which I absolutely cannot stand. Too many ornamentations.

Beyonce was much better. The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir was fabulous. They had a very jazzy (as in chords and modulations) arrangement, which made it interesting!

Yes, I am a lifelong musician.
Popularity is not necessarily an indicator of quality.

They probably don't sell many CDs of the Late Beethoven String Quartets, but that doesn't mean they are not excellent.
