65. The gun went off as the owner was unzipping the case to show to the trained officer

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/01/19/2-wounded-when-gun-goes-off-during-weapons-check-at-gun-show-at-nc-state/

<snip>

The fairground is operated by the state agriculture department. Agency spokesman Brian Long says a 12-gauge shotgun discharged while its owner unzipped its case for a law enforcement officer to check it at a security entrance.

<snip>

The trained officer did not do this.

The shotgun was not handled properly or it WOULD NOT HAVE discharged where it could have possibly hurt anyone.

30. When I was in highschool

we had a "job fair". Area professionals came and gave talks about their jobs. One of them was a police officer.

He took out his gun to show the class at a kid's request. It went off. Fortunately, it was a "rubber bullet", but it still went through a partition, the door of a cabinet and lodged in the back. One kid - I think his name was John R - felt the bullet whiz by his head, missing him by the barest margin.

Trained police officer.

I used to try to use "firearm" and "weapon" because I was told by, er, gun enthusiasts that those were the proper words, not "gun." Then I noticed that gun shows call themselves things like the Dixie Knife and Gun Show so I went back to using the word gun.

It would be interesting to know how long "after" the safety check the shot occurred - did it go off while the officer was checking, or did the officer miss a round in the chamber, or did the owner reload after passing the checkpoint? I would have thought that a checked gun would get a band or a zip tie placed to prevent a reload...

So many times they become "amateur hour". I don't want to be in the same room (or zip code) with unskilled people and deadly weapons. That's why I guess I haven't been to the range since I left the job a few years ago.

46. maybe there is a reason he was at the show and not busting criminals

you wouldnt think a US Army SOLDIER would do that either, but they do, all the time. Think of them as "amateur"?

but seriously, unless you have personally, and extensively trained with somebody, you need to be skeptical - __really__ skeptical - of them if they have a gun - which are always potentially loaded, right? - in their hands.

I spent 16 months in Iraq. with the same soldiers. the same squad. Some of them I would never stand in front of.

to get back to the amateur hour at this gun show... they dont have clearing barrels? why was the bullet able to ricochet and/or hit two people? was he pointing it at them? Dont laugh, that happens a lot. It also means to cop pulled the trigger before clearing the weapon. Clearing means dropping the magazine. working the action 2 or more times. VISUALLY INSPECTING THE CHAMBER. Work the action again. Then in the Army we squeeze the trigger to release the springs.

Im not a police officer. But when it comes to handling firearms, you better believe Im a professional. If you arent, people die.

1- A gun is ALWAYS loaded
2- ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
3- ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

Did I forget to mention
ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

If checking a gun for clearance, they need a bullet stop- a stack of 2-3 phonebooks work just fine.

KNOXVILLE A vendor at the Knoxville Gun & Knife Show shot himself in the hand while attempting to show off his personal weapon Sunday, according to the police.

Bill Adams, 44, of Kodak, was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries following the incident, which was reported at 2:39 p.m., according to Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk.

Adams, a licensed vendor at the event in the Jacob Building on Magnolia Avenue, apparently was showing his personal concealed weapon a Kimber .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun to a customer when the weapon discharged, DeBusk said.

86. I did. Yes, the count is up to maybe 10 shootings at gun shows, some dating back 4 years.

I'm not reducing children's deaths at all, I'm only reinforcing the point that a single instance, no matter how heinous, or a dozen instances for that matter, doesn't qualify as "typical". We're talking less than 1% occurrence rate.

When Fox News or some other right wing outlet spins a story with a misleading headline, the DU community jumps all over it. I'd like to see us hold DU members to the same standards when we see thread titles inaccurately representing information.

No offense intended.

And only minutes before they were probably bragging about their knowledge, their skill, how they'd never be so stupid as to...

And then someone's child is dead. Someone's eye is gone and they're brain damaged. Someone's hand is useless.

I HAVE been to gun shows. Because I had to go. Not because I wanted to be around the neonazi crap that goes on, or the worship of the almighty gun. But to try to keep an eye on things.

83. approx. 5000 gun shows/year in the US, 4 shootings found by DU members

I think my question regarding the working definition of "typical" is still valid in the context of information linked from this thread.

again, I'm not an advocate of gun shows, but I am an advocate of accurate information being presented. I don't think "shootings at gun shows" meets most understandings of the word "typical".

I think we at DU shouldn't spin stories like Fox News.

multiple copies of news stories. It would be more helpful to know how many gun shows were held and the number of shootings during that time. Google just brings up a lot of noise.

The estimated number of gun shows held each year in the United States can range from 2,000 to 5,200.

Did someone bring a gun into the show to sell and at the door a person did an inspection to see if it was loaded or not?
If so then I must assume it was loaded and while doing the inspection it 'went off'. As someone else said "always assume a gun is loaded and point it in a safe direction".

45. What we're learning on DU.

By the time Obama submits real policy change on gun control, we on DU will know how to take them apart and clean them based on all the information we're reading.

48. Oh shit!

Tragic. One person's stupidity leaves one hurt and another mortally hurt. This is so sad. Our fascination with these damn guns is a disease in itself.

49. Another day, another shooting in America

How many more such incidents will occur this year, I wonder? Will there be another school shooting, where the body count will be even higher than in Sandy Hook? Very sad.

50. Well, that's one way to celebrate Gun Appreciation Day.

Fucking dumbasses.

State Fairgrounds officials will hold a press conference at 4:30 p.m. Saturday to provide an update about the incident. WRAL.com will live stream the press conference.

80. Speculation here, but hiring a cop to routinely check for a variety of empty weapons...

is not a good idea. Even if the cop knows his firearms, they are HIS firearms. Would he know how to check my semi-auto '03 rifle? I doubt it. It was made in 1905, and works just fine. Most people don't even know how or WHERE it is loaded, including personnel at airports.

68. They've updated the story:

Breaking News: Officials said the Dixie Gun and Knife Show will continue Sunday without private gun sales. Three people, including a retired sheriff's deputy, were injured Saturday when a gun brought in by a patron who planned to sell it accidentally discharged.
