NRA says they just want to enforce existing gun laws - but then do everything they can to stop that

They say we don't need any new gun laws, just enforce the laws already in place.

Except when it comes to actually enforcing those laws, they really don't even want that.

They are against any sort of federal firearms database. In some places, they've managed to get laws passed actually requiring the destruction of firearms applications within a short amount of time. They are dead set against any sort of registration - fearing that some day, gub'mit brownshirts will use this as a basis to go barging into people's houses to take their guns.

Jon Stewart had a great piece on this recently detailing the NRA's opposition to many common sense methods that would actually make it much easier to enforce current gun laws.

So remember this whenever you hear someone say "just enforce the laws we already have".

ON EDIT: I found a link that has the video I'm referring to: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/17/jon-stewart-nra-limiting-atf-law-enforcement_n_2495301.html

1. What existing laws do they not want enforced?

There is black letter law against building a federal firearms database. They want that enforced too.

Much of Obama's executive decisions (orders...) are basically to enforce what is already on the books.

3. A comedy piece? Surely you can do better than that...

I found none of the the executive actions to be egregious. Not sure where the NRA stood on them.

In terms of the legislative proposals, Even Harry Reid is saying they are iffy at best.

4. So you didn't even bother watching it

It might be on Comedy Central, and Stewart may present it in a comedic manner, but facts speak for themselves.

Do you have any issues with the particular points that Stewart makes? Or are you not even going to bother yourself with it, since it's a "comedy piece"?

5. I got about half way through it

He said little to nothing of substance.

I addressed the 23 points and the proposed legislation. The former looks good, the latter improbable.

6. I see

So in other words, you don't have anything to rebut his arguments.

7. There was nothing to rebut

It was a comedy routine.
