Lawrence O'Donnell calls out Tom Selleck. If you haven't seen it, you're missing out.

Wow. O'Donnell questions Selleck's humanity, challenges him to respond to repulsive NRA ad.

I've never previously seen anyone called out like this. O'Donnell builds his case with precision, passion and compassion.

My respect for O'Donnell just went up a full notch. It'll be interesting to see how Selleck responds.

1. Thanks for this; he sure threw down that gauntlet!

Kudos to Lawrence; I too look forward to Selleck's response. And bravo/brava to Jon Stewart and Rosie O'Donnell for going there way back when.

2. I saw it last night...it was pretty amazing

And that clip of Selleck on O'Donnell's show is so indicative of his ilk in that he wants it both ways: to use his celebrity to spew NRA/rightwing talking points but then not be held accountable for it.

27. playing a good man on teevee.

Well, "Magnum PI" was the gayest show on the tube back then.... now only exceeded by "RuPaul's Drag Race" (which is better).

I laughed every time that bulky hairy guy unconvincingly said in his high tenor voice "Stop... or I'll shoot." Why do you think all our gaydar went off back then? Us gay guys were like "Girl!.... you so butch!"

Anyway...

It is interesting that he said to Rosie "When I as a kid, the NRA used to....." Because that is a good point. Back when I was a kid in the 60's and early 70's the NRA was a nerdy organization that touted gun safety and knowing gun laws.

Not any more!

And it's clear as day.... Tom!

29. I have to take your...

... word on the "Magnum PI" stuff. Personally never watched it.

I do however, watch "Bluebloods," in large part because the character he plays is a very principled man. Apparently, that attribute is purely acting, because in real life, Mr Selleck appears to have no principles at all. I may have to reassess whether to watch that program from here forward.

5. Holy Sh*t!!! That was amazing! Lawrence O'Donnell nailed it & called out Tom "I'm the NRA" Selleck

Loved the past clips of Jon Stewart calling out Tom Selleck (wow Jon was so young & cute only 14 years ago) and then the clips of the interviews between Rosie O'Donnell calling out Tom Selleck (but apologizing just when she got close enough to pointing out Tom Selleck's lack of humanity)...

Lawrence didn't hold back....he spoke so directly and left no option for Tom Selleck.....if Selleck has any humanity, he needs to come forward and speak out....if Tom Selleck doesn't come forward and condemn what the NRA just did related to the ad directly bringing in the President's children - then we all know Tom Selleck has no humanity and is also a coward....and who supports this heinous organization and all it stands for.

Frankly, I think Tom Selleck should resign from NRA....that would be the single greatest thing he could do and issue a statement saying he in good conscience could not remain on the board of an organization that only one month after the slaughter at Sandy Hook comes out promoting an App that shows assault weapons targeting coffins and that children as young as 4 yrs old can use. Then he needs to state unequivocally that while he may still feel strongly about certain gun rights etc, that he cannot remain on the board and associated with an organization that would put out an ad that directly brings in the children of the President.

I hope Tom Selleck is paying attention...this is truly his moment and it truly will reveal who he is as a "Mensch".... Or not....

7. Love ODonnell's show!

Lately, his detailed takedown of the NRA has been especially good. Seems to be digging into that board one by one by one, with a horrifying connection to Newtown's residents.

I hope old fashioned shunning is going on in Newtown's against those big NRA powers.

If I recall correctly didn't Rosie get criticized a lot for 'picking' on him?

I stopped liking Tom Selleck as soon as I found out he was a hard nosed Republican who said Barbara Streisand should shut up about her liberal views. That was back in 1995.

It was a print interview with Selleck. The interviewer asked him to respond to a remark Streisand had made, and his repsonse was, "Now, Barbra shouldn't have said that." (!) And I rememebr thinking, what, only you have the right to free speech? Barbra should go back into the ktchen where she belongs?

Unbelievable.

I like Tom Selleck. He has a very high likeability factor. A lot of crazy stoopid right wingers do and did, and yet I still like them... and I will watch their shows if I think they're good.

However, I will also support those like O'Donnell who call them out and provide us a voice speaking out against their wrongheaded views or positions!

23. You need to read Drew Westin's "The Political Brain". He makes an excellent case that facts ...

... presented without an emotional appeal simply do not sway opinion He cites several examples where Democrats have been loathe to use emotinal appeals, and lost elections because of it. he also presents several examples where nitwits on the right won elections only because of their carefully constructed appeals to emotion.

It is foolish to cede the most persuasive methods of argument to the other side.

Quite the contrary, Democrats should be using their own integrity as the basis for emotional appeals. Read the book, it's very informative.

28. I appreciate what you are saying

but I have an advanced degree in Organizational Psych and with all due respect, there is a corollary to blood flow in two separate parts of the brain that causes a measurable drop in IQ (as much as 30 points) when emotionally stimulated in whats called an "amygdala hijack". Understanding this is a powerful tool for persuasion, and using it proactively renders already fearful folks sheep. It IS an integrity issue, most just don't understand why.

30. Westin is well versed in how the amygdala works, and writes of it at length...

Your characterization of using such techniques making "already fearful folks sheep" is exactly what conservatives are doing, deliberately and skillfully.

Countering by employing such techniques may offend your sensibilities, but it doesn't have to be inherently bad. Westin includes several examples that demonstrate highly ethical appeals.

BTW, everyone is being subjected to these appeals, every single day. Do you really think Democrats should ignore this, especially when doing so absolutely guarantees losing elections?

35. If you have a real degree in psychology then you know that ALL humans including yourself

respond to emotional appeals whether they consciously think they do or not.

You also know that we (including you) disregard information that doesn't comport with our own preconceived notions.

You like to think you make decisions using only one side of your brain. But you are fooling yourself.

37. Actually, I was drawn to psych

based on the personal need to understand my own emotional deficiencies and how powerfully destructive emotions can be. I am very glad to see someone realize (as I do) that 95% of human behavior is predictable, ie. the "people are people" falsehood.

But knowing that, and knowing how easy it is to lead someone to act irrationally, integrity becomes key.
