Holy Sh*t! The Republicans are freaking destroying themselves!

Holy Sh*t! The Republicans are freaking destroying themselves!
by FightingRegistrar

Okay. So we know that Americans want sensible gun laws. Right?

Well this issue has struck a chord with my Republican mother and Libertarian father. My mom, who hasn't voted Democrat since probably 1976, is on a rampage following what happened in Newtown. She wants the 2nd amendment repealed. Well, maybe she's going a bit far, but I'm telling you this issue is really resonating among anyone who isn't a total f*cking gun nut.

Mom really hates Obama. Or I should say HATED Obama (past tense), until now. Look what she wrote on her facebook page this morning:

"Thanks Joe and Barack. A sane plan for at least TRYING to curb gun violence. Are you listening, Heidi?"

She's refering to Heidi Heitkamp. My parents live in Fargo. They think the Republicans have gone off the deep end. "They're f*cking crazy," says my Dad on a regular basis.

Not only are people realizing that the Republicans are bad for the country, they are considering not voting for them. Wouldn't it be awesome if we could take the House back in 2014? I'm telling you, this sabre rattling over the debt ceiling and fiscal cliff, along with the stubbornness over reasonable gun laws is going to crash the Republican Party in 2014.

Let's take back the House! Our House.... is a very very very fine house!

1. Votes are the answer

YES WE CAN.
But we need to make sure we have people who will run against the crazies and that people vote.
It is not enough to vote only during Presidential elections. We need to vote every time.
2010 was a disaster for us because people became complacent.

this coming Friday. Messina will be heading OFA and all the strategists will be on board to do what they did for President Obama's last campaign, as a non-profit, to support his second term agenda, to work on key legislative battles, and to train future leaders and local issues around the country.

Ed Schultz was bashing the shit out of Al Franken for not being sufficiently supportive of an assault weapon ban for Ed's approval. Toward the end of his show, somebody brought up his good friend, Heidi Heitkamp. He changed the subject. Nothing to see here. Run along. Usually, I like Ed okay, but sometimes, he is goddamn hypocrite.

50. In '68 I had a "discussion" with ND Sen. Burdick about gun control, after my boss was shot.

I had been working for Bob Kennedy until the assassination, and then a lot of us Kennedy staffers started doing a push for gun control. I was handling the ND petition and working the State Dem convention, trying to get everyone who was anyone in ND politics to sign on. OMG did Quinten Burdick ever work me over, up one side and down the other about political death in ND for anyone even remotely associated with such ideas. Years later he took several hours to hear me out on my foreign affairs experiences, but we never again talked gun control!

Anyway, there is still that element of committing political suicide in ND by siding with gun control. It is difficult to convince people who live in a nearly crime-free region that guns are a problem. Look at the map of where gun deaths have occurred since Sandy Hook. ND, SD, MT, WY, these states had about zero last time i looked. It is a different world and culture, to be sure, and the disconnect with the rest of the country on the danger of guns is profound for a reason, guns are NOT a problem there in the same ways they are elsewhere.

I'm glad that they are seeing that America needs government the same as any civilized and well run country.

...on a side note... no one votes "Democrat". When we speak of ourselves in the RightWing slang it allows the haters to take hold of our name and demean it. It started when the RightWing could not take the time to use it correctly and emphasized the "rat'. We are the Democratic Party. As members, we are Democrats.

So your parents have never voted for a Democrat or they have never voted Democratically. Capital D. I have seen many fine Democrats fall into this. We have to reclaim it.

I get your point on the Democratic vs Democrats issue, however the nuance even as you presented it "...no one votes "Democrat...We are the Democratic Party. As members, we are Democrats." is so subtle that it falls on deaf ears. So the reprehensible thugs in the GOP called us DemocRATS in a political ad a decade ago. Probably the most original idea they've had in 40 years. Who gives a flying fig what they call us? I do however cringe everytime I see Dems expending unnecessary energy trying to correct everyone within the party on something so trivial in the grand scheme of things.

https://twitter.com/daledurbin/status/289954194134298627

IF (and of course, he's not) Obama was going to storm every RWNJ's house and confiscate their guns, you'd think these morons would realize they wasted a lot of money they could have spent buying survival rations, barbed wire, fuel, Glenn Beck's gold coins, etc.

No wonder the sane among us were quick to see that this whole furor by the NRA is motivated solely by profit for the gun manufacturers and sellers. THEY don't care if the morons' guns get confiscated later.

It just isn't even the subject of assault weapons and high capacity ammo anymore. The GOP has become a complete caricature of itself. There's lyin' Ryan and his pro-rape bill that would allow rapists to sue their victims who tried to get abortions in other states. Then, you have them doubling down on the stupid by egging on companies that want to keep from providing contraceptives to their employees to disobey the law and get thrown in jail. And somehow, comparing that to Martin Luther King and the battle for civil rights. And they keep on adding to the ignorance by whipping up the 47% and "free stuff." Every comments section in every conservative post I troll talks about how African-Americans, Hispanics, students, and women--to name a few--only voted for Obama so that they wouldn't have to work, just get all this great free "stuff." With those kind of attitudes, it only makes sense that Republicans will keep losing to the same demographics that they keep mocking and denigrating.

28. Ofcourse, the GOP wasn't always like this, GHWBush resigned from the NRA

After they gave him the lifetime achievement award. Reagan gave the middle finger to the NRA. They helped put him in office, he got the 1986 Gunowners Rights Legislation passed, but then turned on them. When he realized that sh&t wasn't working, he came back from the dark side. Not only did he sign the letter of support for Clinton's assault weapons ban, he wrote individually to atleast 2 members of congress personally. That vote only passed by 2 votes. Gerald Ford also signed that letter w/Jimmy Carter. The NRA was taken over by LaPierre, a coup just about. They tried to oust him but let him stay on probationally and it's been down hill from there. There is a fantastic website I found with all the information about the NRA. It's called meetthenra.org. It details all the criminals, lobbyists, and gun manufacturers on their board by name. Go to leader profiles. Look up Manny Fernandez & rep Don Young good example of where the politics are.

(the part in bold):

"So ND is pushing for concealed weapons permits (you could take 'em to church) and allowing concealed guns in schools - as long as the district allows it. Good grief. REPEAL the 2nd Amendment and rewrite the damn thing so that people can UNDERSTAND what the word MILITIA means. Oh bring it on! I'm ready for you."

When the 2nd Amendment was written, I'm pretty sure it wasn't intended for citizens to own weapons of warfare. Duh.

Also, I was reminded of Joe Biden's quips during the photo session with Heidi Heitkemp & her family after her mock swearing-in. Now that I know who she is, I get what the joke was all about. Biden's jokes began after the photographer said, "Drop your hands to the side."

36. The weapons that the Second Amendment covered were in fact hunting weapons,

that farmers and townspeople used to SUPPORT the burgeoning government. The Second Amendment doesn't cover citizens owning specialized weapons that are made solely for killing people, Scalia et al made that clear in the Heller ruling. Essentially, the Heller ruling was that a private citizen has a right to a handgun to defend home, but as a sidebar, the court opined that assault style weapons and high capacity magazines most certainly were not covered by what the Founders envisioned in the Second Amendment.

38. I kind of got the impression from Heller that it was more of an open question as to the weapon type.

Indeed, the SCOTUS has taken great interest in Second Amendment cases... I'm sure there will be more clarification in the coming years ahead, especially as some of these more restrictive state-level bans wind their way through the courts.

But really, all rifles are "assault weapons" if used in the wrong hands. Even bolt-action single-shot hunting rifles can just as easily be fashioned into de facto sniper rifles.

I just think its kind of silly to pretend that any gun design didn't originate with military-use in mind.

58. You are right about what constitutes an assault needing definition.

I think the criteria used should be how many rounds a gun can eject with a single squeeze of the trigger and no other action done to prep for firing of more rounds. The definition should also cover any appendage that allows the rifle to meet the rounds firing standard stated earlier.

I don't think Adam Lanza would have been able to kill 20 children and 6 teachers and administrators as quickly as he did if he was using a reduced capacity gun that he had to reload to continue killing. If Lanza had a limited capacity gun that he had to reload, some kids that died may have had a chance to escape, and Lanza would have heard the sirens that caused him to kill himself before he killed the number of people that he killed.

On a personal level, I see no reason why a civilian should have a gun that fires more than 10 rounds before reloading. If one looks at a defense in the case of a home invasion, the expectation should be that a person protecting their home has taken time to learn how to aim shots accurately. A person spraying bullets wildly about stand a chance to hit un-intended targets like relatives, neighbors and friends.

44. Something aint right

with Republicans these days, its as if they've all come down with collective dementia.
They've all gone crazy. Were they always like this? or is it because Obama is in office?

48. The media world has been transformed by the Internet.

They can't buy your point of view on Facebook, they can't control all the liberal bloggers, they can't pay enough trolls to bring down Kos and DU.

They are a minority and everyone knows it today. They were the minority in the past too, but they were able to control the electorate with media dominance.

46. Freerepubic was surprisingly tame the day Obama announced the EOs on guns

I think that the Tea Party effect is when corporate and RW extremist interests create and amplify a very small, very loud minority that misrepresents the heartbeat of the country. They are good at it but this issue is a stretch for even them. Mainstream USA does not relate to needing machine guns.

None of my repub friends oppose the assault weapons restrictions. They kinda say wtf? to the RW position on this. .

52. The minority rule thing was bound to come back at em

They've got it in the house - a majority voted for dems, but gerrymandering got us repubs.

They've got it in the senate - 2 votes per state gives an issues bias to small red states.

They've got it with the money - a few billionaires are pushing their agendas over the mainstream.

At some point this all doubles back with folks who are basically good, well-meaning (if not progressive) people going "WTF? Like when did this happen? These people don't represent me." It's coalesced on them.

Bullying wins battles, not wars. An intelligent and focused campaign can win us the house.
