End freeze on gun violence research - this is the most important EO

Since this is going to shape our direction moving forward.

All of the other EOs, while they will help, won't have as much effect as this.

1. The President cannot fund them via EO

Appropriations will still be required and some changes in the existing law as well

3. Let us both hope we get the funds for that

If you disagree, I ask you to look at your handle and then ask yourself "what's wrong with finding the solution?"

10. Requires an appropriation via Congress. Under current law could not happen under a CR

Maybe that will add more to actually getting a budget passed this FY

2. I'm fine with it

But I don't think it should be the CDC. Guns aren't germs; if I ran the zoo I'd have EO'd the National Institute of Justice to get a proper head (not a political appointee) and do the studies - criminology is supposed to fall under their aegis. Yes, they're a pretty broken department but that can and should be fixed.

9. The CDC is very appropriate.

The whole "guns aren't germs" thing is an NRA talking point which was started up when the gun lobby wanted to ignore many of the scientific findings regarding gun safety from public health researchers -- for example, that statistically, guns don't actually offer a safety benefit, but rather increase risk of death, since a gun in the home are far more likely to kill someone living in the home than an intruder.

The idea that epidemiologists only study germs can only be the consequence of profound ignorance of the field of public health. Cars aren't germs either, and yet improved motor vehicle safety is one of the major public health accomplishments. Basically, public health determines ways to prevent death and injury and extend life expectancy through public policy.

In reality, gun violence research is interdisciplinary, including public health, criminology, sociology, economics, etc.

4. There were NO Executive Orders.

Please stop perpetuating this misunderstanding. They were Executive Actions/Proposals. They are not the same things.

5. What's so bad if they were EOs?

It's a President's duty to issue a few
