I don't think that Rachel Maddow gets the idea of a Troll as it is used in the modern way...

I guess it means someone waiting under cover to observe and pounce when they think it is advantageous.

It they are Trolling for bites, a kind of fishing, then she would be right.

But she used the billy-goat gruff tale as an example and that would mean a troll is waiting under cover to pounce at the right time...

3. The traditional use of 'troll' on the Internet is to refer to someone intentionally posting

something they don't really believe to provoke a strong reaction from others.

Coulter is an example of a classic, professional troll.

Limbaugh frequently trolls (he often laughs at what he is saying when he does it).
