The paranoid, foam at the mouth gun extremists would never support Obama anyway

Let's just think about the politics of this for a moment, and never mind the fact that Obama will not be on the ballot again.

Obama did nothing on the gun issue for four years, except for signing two bills that allowed carrying of firearms in national parks and allowing guns in checked bags on Amtrak trains. What did that get him from the NRA and the Gun Owners of America? Or the Angry White Men who disproportionately make up those organizations?

Even if Obama were to compile a 100% pro-gun record, it would avail him nothing from the likes of these people. These are the same people who are some combination of teabaggers, birthers, racists and "Christian" fascists. They would vote against him anyway over non-gun related issues like gays, abortion, taxes and health care.

So politically there is nothing to gain by continuing to be deferential to people who never, ever, under any circumstances would support you anyway.

1. Depending on who you ask,

I am a paranoid gun extremist.

I voted for President Obama, twice.

Believe it or not, there are gun loving liberals, right here in the DU.

2. However, lots of ordinary gun owners did in the last election.

Will those same gun owners vote for Democrats in 2014? Some will, some won't. There will be votes lost. The number - and whether or not it costs us the Senate - will depend on just what specific changes come out of the latest round of attempts to enact stricter controls. If this push ends up shifting political power to the GOP a la 1994, it had better fucking well produce some results (in terms of reducing gun violence).

4. The NRA spent the last four years

running a propaganda machine that said:
-Obama hates guns
-he won't do anything until his 2nd term
-he will legislate by decree, going around Congress
-he will use the UN to get a treaty that will allow guns to be taken from US citizens
-etc, etc, etc ad nauseum

Now given that not all gun owners are paranoid foam at the mouth extremists, can you imagine how the NRA campaign will look at the midterms. I'll give it to you in four words:
We told you so.

So what is the one and only counter Democratic candidates will have... being able to show a decrease in crime that can be attributed to Obama's actions.

Now I agree with 21 of the EOs and can see the point, but doubt effectiveness of the other 2. Do you think for a moment the NRA will bother to stop and say, well we have supported, in one way or another nearly half of Obama's actions.

This is not a call to do nothing, as that is not an option either, but a reminder that it is a high stakes game. Unless the NRA and/or gun owners are brought deep enough into the process to be stake holders it will remain an us v. them issue. Dems could win this battle but loose the war in '14 and '16.

5. 2014 Congressional elections are the issue, not the president

winning back the House means defeating some pro-gun repukes. Which means pro-gun voters can't be ignored. We don't have to cater to them but we can't ignore them. Characterizing all gun owners as foaming at the mouth gun nuts is mostly likely not a winning proposition if we need their votes.

6. NRA is firing up our base, it's a turnout game and it's not 1994 anymore

Democrats usually don't turn out in non presidential elections, this might bring them out in an off year election.

I doubt there are so many RBKA extremist Democrats, I think that's why they astroturf DU so heavy is fake us into buying into a false reality.

7. And Obama is firing up their base.

we have to convince voters that previously voted for repukes to vote for dems. We are fighting for states where our base is smaller than their base.
