Did Obama ban assault riffles? Can we talk about the other causes of violence/massacres now?

The gun issue has been dealt with no?

Now we can talk about what drugs the shooters are taking when they commit these massacres?

Can we talk about the drug war now, the leading cause of gun murders?

No one is saying it's not the guns, but executive orders have been made now.

and the criminals who break the law.... will still break the gun laws as well.

We need to do more than just remove guns from law abiding citizens.

14. Obviously you do care about them or you wouldn't have posted.

Something has to be done. Obama will never satisfy all the people all the time. Let's get something done and stop descending into pointless squabbles about how it isn't a perfect solution. Nothing is a perfect solution.

Obama got the ball rolling. Let's see where it goes.

stop exporting our weapons as well

stop the freaking waste of money on the drug war, innocent people are getting killed

we need to do more to stop the violence in our society

25. The drug 'war' also intercepts heroin and cocaine from entering the country. A good thing, IMO.

We won't be able to simply 'get rid of the guns' so we need to focus more on what is doable. If the CDC study addresses other topics other than straight-forward gun control, I say let's get the truth out there.

But until something more concrete is identified, banning assault weapons is at least a step in the right direction.

Perhaps you should learn more about them, and then post your opinion. That'd be good.

won't there be more available for them since people who follow the law will have to get rid of them?

18. Interdiction efforts will be able to stop some of those guns from entering the country.

It isn't a perfect solution but then what is?

Banning them will help stop irresponsible gun owners like Lanz's mother from owning them. It's a start.

42. Hey dion! Don't you find it fascinating that the people who think this president never does....

anything that's progressive, or "doesn't go far enough", or "he was forced to do it" never show up to commend him for taking a stand. This is not the first stand he's taken, but he never gets props from his DU detractors. It's the most pressing issue of the day, until the president actually addresses it, and they move to the next outrage. It must be exhausting.

35. I love how everyone has something to say when it's 'pile on a poster' time

but when someone posts an important topic that everyone should know about, no one can be bothered to answer or bump it.

no one can be bothered to actually talk about anything other than anti-gun talking points.

Can't anyone think for themselves.

As a psychologist, I was trained to look deeper than just what is on the surface, but whatever.

Good work Duers, always working to inform and enlighten.

40. It's hard to consider a post serious

when it starts out by suggesting that the President has banned assault weapons and follows up with the bizarre statement "...The gun issue has been dealt with no? ".
I do think that the issue of what part drugs play in these tragedies is a legitimate and pressing one. But any chance of this post being a vehicle for that discussion was forfeited by you from the outset and whining about DUers' responses won't change anything.

45. If you actually were trained as you claim

You might "look deeper" and realize that the vast majority of "illegal" guns were legal guns that were stolen or straw-purchased. Thus limitations on legal guns result in de-facto limitations on illegal guns. Thus reducing the deadly-ness of weapons used in the drug war.

Or had you not noticed that fully-automatic weapons are used very rarely in crimes? Kinda indicates current efforts are not as much of a waste of time as you claim.
