3. Absolutism? It would pay well to give attention to section 1021 of the NDAA, which has been signed

twice into law...providing the indefinite detention of US citizens suspected of terrorism or terrorist ties, without trial or representation. And the patriot act extension. And the FISA extension. And DHS using police agencies as tentacles. And 64 drone bases being built within the US to spy upon US citizens. WTF. This is a democracy based upon the Constitution. Isn't it?

I'm no damn republican. I'm for Democracy and the Constitution above all, and will NOT be silent regardless of who is in power, if they are fucking with Democracy and the Constitution. "Tough shit" for your rights if you don't fight for them.

34. heaven05, what is your link to a reputable news source reporting that Obama tried to get rid

of NDAA, FISA or DHS?

I have heard that NDAA is something he insisted should be enacted. I believe that he criticized FISA and then, when he was in the Senate, voted to excuse those communications companies that violated it.

As for DHS, Obama appoints the director and could weaken or get rid of the department if he wished.

I don't think there is any reason or evidence to think that Obama tried to get rid of any of those programs. To the contrary.

11. no matter what the President does some here will ALWAYS be happy

Obama kept 85% of the Bush tax cuts, including $1.3 trillion for the richest 5%.

Some here are happy, or making excuses for him. The economy, the adult, not a dictator, blah, blah, blah.

He could have kept 100% of the Bush tax cuts (in fact he did in 2010) and some would STILL be happy, or make excuses. The economy, the adult, the election, the need to compromise, blah, blah, blah.

And to think we used to marvel at how some of those Bush supporters would just support him NO MATTER WHAT he did.

Politics is clearly more like sports than it is like debate or math. Facts, logic and reason have nothing to do with it. Either you are a FAN of the San Fransisco Democraters or you are a fan of the Atlanta Dirty GOPers.

If one of those teams commits a blatant pass interference at the end of the game and it does not get called by the refs, very few of the fans of the winning team are gonna say "my team did not play fair, they should not have won". No, most of them will be cheering MY TEAM is going to the SUPERBOWL!!!!!

The strange part to me, is how we cheer for OUR team when our team scores for the other side. Tax cuts for the rich are a victory for the Republicans, but when Obama proposes them and signs them, the fans all cheer.

Of course, it does help that Obama lies and calls them tax increases on the rich.

Wait for it though, I will be attacked by a loyal fan for daring to say that the Emperor is not telling the truth.

It helps that he's a dreamy POTUS stud.

Was it like this when Clinton was in office? Hard to say. The economy me was good and the conservative things that he did (NAFTA, relaxing Wall Street regulations) wouldn't have an impact until he was no longer in the White House.

13. I'm disappointed

Though after thinking it through I don't think it's the President's fault. I believe if he could do more through EO he would have.

I guess I just bought into the heated rhetoric from both sides of the issue. I overestimated the power of the EO.

We're still without an assault rifle ban, a ban on high capacity clips, and a ban on mass ammo purchases, which I think is the very least that needs to be done. I also don't see a path to get those things passed through Congress, if indeed that is what it takes.

Reality is static. Liberal and conservative are not 'labels'. They are concrete sets of political positions. If the center moves right, the center becomes right Wing.

Opinions change all the time. "Concrete sets of political positions?" Really? Then explain how the isolationist Republican Party of the pre-WWII became the neocon Republican Party of today.

Or for a longer view, how the pro-Abolition Republican Party of the mid-1800s became the anti-minority party of today.

My point is the country is not conservative, or even centrist. If one looks at how popular various (unlabeled) policies are, the country is at least center-left.

The leaders of the Democratic party are too often "centrist", whereas their constituents are not.

Of course, since this is a website for Democrats after all the latter is more tolerated, and tolerable. Personally I don't find it worthwhile to converse with ANYONE who is not capable of seeing a thing objectively.

More often though there are people who ARE capable of being happy with a thing Obama has done, or are capable of criticizing him should they feel it called for, yet they are called extremists merely because they have a different opinion than whoever is judging them. It tends to get out of hand at times, and it certainly doesn't help foster civil discourse.

31. Obama's the Decider for the whole Country...

He gets to decide the bankster and corporate asses we kiss, which criminals to protect, and who can take we the sheeple to the cleaners.

And he gets to decide, good or bad, which way the Nations moral compass points, along with drones and smart bombs.
And it doesn't matter which way he points the compass, who he allows to extort us, or who he decides to blow up in all our names. Because, we can always count on Right Wing Authoritarian Democrats to grovel and cheer no mater what, while the Right Wing Authoritarian Republicans can always be counted on to piss, moan, and stock up on guns and ammo - no matter what.

And yes, you can always count on liberals to want a raising of the bar when it come to the moral compass, where actions and deeds reflect some sort of demonstrable conscience and compassion towards justice. That would make us happy! But it's not the character of a liberal to except compromising, and pandering to forces that are antithetical to conscience, and justice. Too bad liberals have little to no representation in government, and too bad Right Wing Authoritarians in both political Party's want to censor them and transpose fault onto them in one way or another.

Too bad for us all!

36. my my, another exaggeration in pursuit of silencing criticism

will they never end?

Is this how DU "popularity" is achieved?

I'm guessing the unending stream of posts like this are a mixture of that and an inability to defend him when he is rightly criticised over this and that.

When the people in your life -- family, friends, etc -- do something that is disagreeable or disappoints you, do you always call the end of the relationship and/or your happiness in it?

Most of us hopefully, are adult enough to know and understand what our boundaries are, and when such is called for.

ANd since when did being glad he's in charge and criticising him become mutually exclusive things. Do you quit being glad or become unhappy that you're married to your spouse the moment you utter your first, second, third, etc, criticism of them?

The problem isn't the criticisms of BHO, it's the reaction to them around here that cross the line into abuse.

59. no need for that

the effort to criticize and malign others was blatantly obvious in your remarks, and were the same in spirit and substance as that seen in many around here dedicated to silencing criticism through the same means -- depicting those that are "not happy" with this or that about BHO as being something disagreeable, unpalatable, and intolerable, ranging from miserable (as your "unhappy" stuff indicates) to being rightwing trolls.

My response was in direct response to the example you provided, that was totally devoid (as they almost always are) of any examples that would lead a reasonable person to believe that there is ANYONE here of the lefty persuasion that "wouldn't be happy about or with BHO no matter what he does".

Speaking only for myself, but in terms of the pov I'd argue is all but universally shared by all those like me who voted for him but refuse to be uncritical of him when it's called for, your post and the indictment it explicitly contains of my type, is complete BS.

So your suggestion that I "look in the mirror" is equally so, since what you did and I did are two entirely different things. You and your stuff were indicted here, and you were therefore given an opportunity to respond in the presence of the readers/jurors, whereas you and those like you almost never allow the accused (which remained nameless, and their motives, efforts, and feelings you likely miscontrued for the aforementioned reasons) such an opportunity in these baseless and broadbrushed efforts of this kind. You're indicting a "group" that in all likelihood, doesn't even exist in significant much less threatening numbers as you characterize them, that is intended to include those that criticize BHO on anything.

Methinks before the smoke clears on this little civil war between those around here that wanna silence the criticisms and those willing to criticize, that you guys are a distinct minority, and will lose the "popularity" contest. I'm far from the only only one around here getting quite fed up with explicit and implicit innuendos of this kind.

66. thanks for tacitly conceding the validity of my remarks, and continuing the

"I'm just gonna keep making crap up" campaign which prompted my effort here.

Who said it was "all about me"? I've been posting about this kinda treatment your type have been heaping upon your fellow DUers for months now. It ain't "all about me", it's about the damage your kind are collectively doing to the environment and denizens of it here with your exaggerations and at best, thinly veiled insults. What's particularly pathetic about all the whining your type does in the "divisiveness" vein, is that it is your kind of post/message that creates most of the diviseness, because you lack the "liberal" tolerance for even reading the dissent the criticsims are without sometimes insulting personally, and certainly collectively, those doing the criticizing of BHO's efforts at times. There are several others in this post that made similar remarks in spirit if not substance regarding the endless efforts of like kind coming from "your kind", and there are likely many, many more that didn't bother, given the demonstrated immunity to appeals of the "just because I criticize BHO doesn't mean I don't otherwise support him, don't regret my voting for him, etc" kind your type have.

And again, if my material is so "mindless", why is it that a genius like you can't demonstrate that with the ease with which you breath? You've got "nothing" but an endless succession of dodges that your "mindless rantings" comment is just the latest of, and all of which are just hollow declarations representative of the weakness and/or shallowness of "your" effort here.

I've yet to find one of you tolerant "liberal" types that could defend this kinda garbage, and I really didn't expect you to be the first.

68. LOL -- like I could possibly care about an ignore

and particularly from one who did a fair job of making it personal themselves, as a cursory reading of this thread even by a dimwit would show.

That just makes you a bit of hypocrite on top of all the rest, starting with being wholly unwilling (likely due to being unable) to defend what you posted.

I'll look forward to eviscerating the next top post of yours I happen across that I can find some disagreement with. That I'll be invisible to you will make it all the more amusing.

42. i agree.

it would be naive to think that it could ever be otherwise.
i'm glad he's in charge too but that's not the same as saying he can do no wrong in my eyes. but hell yes i am downright happy that he was reelected.

43. Quite the intellectual giant aren't you?

Of course, there are contrarians, GOP lurkers, troublemakers and the like here on this very large Internet discussion board. Your observation is no more earth shattering than proclaiming the Sun to be very hot or that water is wet.

Also, you forget to mention the very large group of folks that support Obama but also disagree with many of his policies and actions.

In short, your ultra-simplistic observation and "I'm glad he's in charge. Tough shit to those who disagree" mentality is mildly amusing in that you are posting that sentiment on one of the largest DISCUSSION forums on the Internet.

Cheers!

45. Sorry I see much bigger priorities than gun control

Gun control will consume the debate and Congress, and I suspect slow or kill Democratic political momentum. Things that need done (see below) will get bogged down.

These contentious issues and yes gun control is contentious for me because I'm a stickler for more, not less rights. I'm also a stickler that I don't want my rights taken away because of the actions a few criminals. We allowed Americans to be considered guilty first and innocent if proven otherwise.

It appears that I didn't get the memo that progressives are group thinking herd-able cats. I don't read partisan memos and I don't agree that urban elites have the right to cram down policies for rural America either. I use my own ability and views to critically think on issues, as opposed to those who allow others do their thinking for them as do many conservatives.

We need a Congress that works on fixing important things like......environmental change; ensuring no voter suppression and voting machines that don't lie; policies that will correct the building college tuition bubble; ending the wars and ensuring we don't get into others; getting to the root causes of the incredibly high cost of health care and low outcomes; correcting Wall Street before they break us again; bust up the TBTF banks; campaign finance reform that takes the big money out of politics; implement Card Check; immigration; Senate filibuster, etc. The list goes on for high priority items.

Progressive, Populist and Libertarian for citizens rights, not corporations

PS: Obama needed to put a similar priority on prosecuting the Wall St crooked banksters.

47. Im pissed off he's wasting political capital to put in an AWB that won't make any difference

Anyone who actually thinks we are going to ban guns or succeed in doing so is living a fantasy. There 300+ million guns in this country, that we know of. They are not going anywhere. Like it or not...that's the reality.

When the President and everyone else is interested in ideas of gun control that actually might work and be productive....then lets have that debate. But this AWB that is being discussed is absolute garbage. It would not stop a single mass shooting.

There are far more serious problems facing this country. Social Security, Medicare, Education, the economy, debt.... those are issues that are going to impact EVERY SINGLE ONE of our children!

Mr. President...members of Congress...if you are so worried about our kids...do your jobs and fix the f***** economy! Why do I constantly get the feeling this is another bullshit side issue to distract and divide us while the banks, rich, and corporate America continue to rip us off?

This game is old.

54. "tough shit to those who disagree"

right back at cha dude.

And thank you "for stirring up shit" also. No offense but are you drunk right now?

Why not try to constructively engage with people who may disagree with you about Obama's amazing awesomeness?

55. This thread belongs in Meta. Request to OP to self-delete and start a new thread in Meta.

This is the General Discussion forum. Meta is the forum for complaining about DU and DUers.

Those of us who hang out in Meta resent it when other forums get in on our act.
