What Kind of President Takes On The NRA?

President Obama on Wednesday will formally announce the most aggressive and expansive national gun-control agenda in generations as he presses Congress to mandate background checks for all firearm buyers and prohibit assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips.

Gun control? Electoral suicide, right? What kind of"pragmatic," "centrist," DLC-leaning inspirer of "Obamabots," "moderate Republican," "Republican-lite" Democrat would touch that issue with a ten-foot pole?

The Washington Post has an opinion:

The announcement will set off a fierce confrontation with Congress over an issue that has riven American society for decades. Obama’s far-reaching firearms agenda has at best tepid support from his party leaders and puts him at loggerheads with Democratic centrists.

"Democratic centrists" ought to be the least of the President's worries. Never mind the fact that he's facing the most hostile and virulent Republican House in living memory. One which is threatening to tank the U.S. and world economy out of sheer racist spite, while waving their guns in execration at its bloated corpse.

Yes, this is a fine time to bring up gun control.

Days before his second inauguration, Obama is seeking to drive the guns debate in a way that contrasts with the accommodating approach he often took during his first term. In the weeks ahead, he will attempt to rally popular support to bend the will of lawmakers to vote for what he considers the ideal, not merely the possible.

3. I remember a year ago calling for action on gun control reform on DU...

...and being told by the Gungeon crowd that the President was in their pocket and told by the BOG crowd that the President would never propose such a thing for political reasons.

Seems a lot of people never planned on having this conversation. I think the President most certainly did. The time for gun control reform is now.

Despite the fact I've provide them with links to the Daily Kos Seiu poll on gun control MANY times. They prefer the delusion that the majority of the country agrees with them.

If this article is to be believed he is planning on banning some of them.
We will lose the midterms over this. I really believe that. With climate change
speeding up we just cannot afford to lose. The future of the the next generation
is on the line.

Have you seen the latest polls? The only way we lose this is if we let those NRA bastards win.

4. My kind of a President. It's time for a national conversation on the $175 billion cost of carnage.

That's the annual bill of gun violence. One hell of a lot of taxpayer/insurer money, while the NRA and their industry, rake in increasing profits. Time for adult responsibility...of the industry.

It's coming out of the 'Hood and into the white, affluent middle class experience. I hate that it took 20 little ones and 6 of their dedicated leaders all in one event, but we grieve, move on and tackle it.

50. It really seems like a lot of very critical issues are colliding together right now...

Right after the 1st Africian American leader gets re-elected, there is the monetary issues, immigration reform being actively sought, energy issues, green future, climate change, LGBT rights, and now the sacred cow of gun regulation. This is before we even think about the issues outside of our borders.
This president knows how important all these issues are and he is the only one that can press forward and make progress on any of these things. He also knows what kind of danger he is already in, let alone the increasingly unhinged contingent that keeps ratcheting up the hysteria over his presidency.
I agree with your call for even more protection for one of our country's most valuable assets, President Obama. The Secret Service has done an amazing job protecting this man as there have never been more threats to any other president. I have the feeling it will only get worse before it gets better. However, I do believe the tide is finally turning and there is sunshine being brought to a lot of the crazy, dark places for all to see. The more that is seen in context, will hasten the change.

Aaaaaah there he goes again. Taking the backs of the babies that were slaughtered so recently. Standing up to do his best to serve and protect the citizens of this nation.

Our President is taking up the fight, as he did with DOMA. Many deem these things to be "political suicide." He doesn't care. He acts for us.

Thank you Sir, for taking on the tough issues, in the face of oppressing opposition.

I for one have his back, as he has ours!

The Americans With Disabilities Act was passed and signed during the Bush I administration. Bush even said, "Let the shameful wall of exclusion finally come tumbling down."

You read about things like that, and wonder if government is even capable of getting things like that done anymore.

No way that's what you were doing. But I love how you appeared to casually overlook Bill Clinton's attempt to go against the NRA when he he came up with the assault weapons ban. Nope, launched yourself straight into the arms of GHWB.

Or are we talking paid Republican disruptor?

Only you know for sure. I think the majority of us are far too bored to care either way.

and has a strong sense of empathy for parents who have to send their children to school everyday. I think these shootings really motivated him to say enough! He's no stranger to gun violence. There's an incident mentioned in "Dreams From My Father" where he and a friend hit the ground when they hear gunshots. He has an understanding of it that we may not know until he writes his presidential memoir- that I am so looking forward to reading.

When we say we want to restore the assault weapons ban, don't forget when it started.

Recently we seem to be spending a lot of effort restoring Clinton-era legislation: first tax rates, now the assault weapons ban. Not a bad record for someone a lot of Democrats apparently want to disown.
