Any acupuncturists or intergrative MD's or pharmacists know if you can

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by REP (a host of the General Discussion forum).

A friend asked me:

Can you have acupuncture while on Nortryptolin and or Klonipin ?

She was recently psych hospitalized with Seratonin syndrome. She thought she was off psych drug Effexor XR long enough (two months) before she tried 5-htp but it wasn't and ended up with too much Seratonin. That was in October. From end of August thru October and had very high anxiety. She was put on Nortryptolin and Klonpin but still have anxiety and depression. She has tried to meditate, exercise and therapy but the anxiety continues.

She was thinking of trying acupuncture but wasn't sure if it would affect the Sertonin or medication She had tried acupuncture before when she had been off the Effexor XR for two months and it helped until the Seratonin kicked in

1. I can't speak specifically about your friend's predicament, however...

I went off Lexapro at the end of October, supplanting it w/ 5-HTP and B6. I've never felt better. No anxiety or depression episodes since. I have to admit, I'm amazed by the transformation. In the spirit of complete disclosure; I've also been participating in Neuro-Feedback therapy for the last 8 months, as well.

I think the combination of everything has made a significant difference in the quality of my life.

2. A qualified Acupuncturist should ask about meds before treatment.

My best to your friend. Effexor sucks but so do depression and anxiety. I'm on almost no pharmaceuticals; getting the least side effects with MMJ treatment under care of my psychiatrist. I've been treated off and on for 30+ years.)

3. DU is not a medical site.

Seek such advice from medical professionals.

5. no but she knows I go on this site

and so do lots of people.

She has asked the psych... who didn't know. and the accredited acupuncurist and they didn't think so but didn't know what seratonin was either.

in those professions who might be able or care to answer.

7. Acupuncture is great for anxiety. You get stuck in the ear and it's effects are immediate.

I know of no adverse interactions with meds, but you have to tell the practitioner.

What the hell is she doing on Nortyptyline? That's pretty much obsolete for an anti-depressant and its side effects can replicate nervousness and agitation. Klonapin will help but, if taken long enough, can be really hard to get off of--bone aches, witdrawal, etc.

9. Seraton Syndrom

they had to use something old. the modern drugs might have thrown her back into seratonin syndrom

I think she said they dr's at the hospital said to wait at least 2 months before trying anything that would affect the seratonin.

Her psych dr said she might try her on cymbalta if the Nortyptyline isn't working. they said the Nortryptline only side effect was dry mouth.

11. My acupuncturist was an MD

And I believe he prescribed Klonopin for my brother. I was also on major pain meds while I was having acupuncture, since I'd had major surgery and the acupuncture helped me to heal.

16. Locking

This does not fit the SoP of this Forum. A doctor is the best source for medical advice.
