Whoa! Cracks... "House kills amendment to offset Sandy relief bill with spending cuts"

House kills amendment to offset Sandy relief bill with spending cuts
By Pete Kasperowicz - 01/15/13 04:14 PM ET

The House on Tuesday rejected a Republican amendment that would have forced the government to pay for a $17 billion Hurricane Sandy relief bill with a 1.63 percent cut to discretionary programs.

The House voted down the amendment from Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-S.C.) in a 162-258 vote that split Republicans 157-71. Those 71 "no" votes from Republicans were enough to kill the amendment, as all but five Democrats also voted against it.

The vote on Mulvaney's amendment split the GOP leadership, with Majority Leader Eric Cantor (Va.) and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Wash.) voting "yes," while Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) voted against the measure. House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (Wis.) and Rep. Jeb Hensarling (Texas) joined McCarthy in voting "no."

The South Carolina lawmaker was opposed by House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.), who said emergency disaster aid should not be offset with what he called cuts that would hurt many discretionary government programs.

"We must provide this emergency funding, as we are allowed by law, without the devastating slash and burn cuts elsewhere that this amendment would cost," Rogers said. He added that Mulvaney's proposal would cut all programs indiscriminately, "cutting the good and the bad," without giving Congress more choice in deciding what to cut.

2. It'll be interesting to see what they do in April when there's a tornado somewhere in Jesusland

and they're still holding up all this money for victims of Sandy.

12. That would have been interesting.....

Watching those asswipes suddenly pushing to aid tornado victims in Alabama while still not having passed Sandy aid.

I wouldn't bet on it.

8. I wouldn't bet on that shred either.

True believers tend to wear blinders. They really can't see what conflicts with their world view.

5. Why did Ryan vote against it? All those who voted for it should be shamed for taking $$$ themselves.

9. was Mulvaney the gentleman that Al Sharpton ripped an hour ago?

Al nailed this T-party representative. This idiocy about borrowing money
from China to pay for Sandy! New York, New York has always paved our
way ... Our great city, and I would love to help them. And I used to
be a Yankee hater, it took me 40 years to realize that New York would
always take care of me if I had a disaster! The bell rang when NY, NY
had a disaster and all of America did not come sweeping to their aid.

New York always assisted and sent monies to others. Oh, I am states away
from N.Y.

11. Yes, I think so too, not then, but now. You opened up an avenue for me.

I am honored to get a response from babylonsister.
I try to participate from my heart. I fear insulting
someone. I guarded Rudoph Hess at Spandau prison
in 1968. I am anguished at war.

14. You shouldn't be

honored, though thanks for the compliment. I'm just another DUer, but am more of a big mouth and poster.
Glad you're here, and glad it's from your heart!
And I am anguished at war; maybe we're close to the end of warmongering for awhile.
