1. The President tries to educate Chuck Todd

I watched that exchange,live....It sort of seemed to me,that Toadboy intended his line of questioning to be of the "gotcha" nature, designed to showcase how clever and concerned he is...I think he's probably oblivious to the fact that the President verbally slapped him around,instead...

53. I heard that this morning too

I was in another room so couldn't see the tv but heard the name 'chuck' and wondered if it was the Toad Chuck. Well, after Obama had to explain to him that it was like going out for dinner, eating and then not wanting to pay the bill - that this was comparable - money has already been commited - when Obama had to speak real slowly and do the show and tell more than once - I knew it was Chuck Fuck Idiot.

What a moran that doesn't know what the ceiling is really about.

3. Chucky

wouldn't last long in my 93-year-old mother's living room. First time he interrupted anyone (not to mention POTUS) he'd find his ear grabbed and his person draped across a lap for a spanking. No - I do NOT advocate corporal punishment, but I wouldn't mind some penalty for violation of the expectation of respect when the Head of State is speaking.

35. Obama is cool and Chuck Todd is uncool

that's the gist of this thread.

But in case you wanted to know the reporter's question and our president's answer, here is the exchange:

Q: As you know, the Senate Democrats, Harry Reid sent you a letter begging you, essentially, to take -- consider some sort of executive action on this debt ceiling issue. I know youíve said youíre not negotiating on it. Your administration has ruled out the various ideas that have been out there, the 14th Amendment, but just this morning House -- one of the House Democratic leaders, Jim Clyburn, asked you to use the 14th Amendment, and even said sometimes thatís what it takes. He brought up the Emancipation Proclamation, saying it took executive action when Congress wouldnít act, and he compared the debt ceiling to that.

So are you considering a Plan B? And if not, why not?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, Chuck, the issue here is whether or not America pays its bills. We are not a deadbeat nation. And so thereís a very simple solution to this. Congress authorizes us to pay our bills.

Now if the House and the Senate want to give me the authority so that they donít have to take these tough votes, if they want to put the responsibility on me to raise the debt ceiling, Iím happily (sic) to take it. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, had a proposal like that last year, and Iím happy to accept it.

But if they want to keep this responsibility, then they need to go ahead and get it done. And you know, there are no magic tricks here. There are no loopholes. There are no, you know, easy outs. This is a matter of Congress authorizes spending. They order me to spend. They tell me: You need to fund our Defense Department at such-and-such a level. You need to send Social Security checks. You need to make sure that you are paying to care for our veterans.

They lay all this out for me, and -- because they have the spending power. And so I am required by law to go ahead and pay these bills.

Separately, they also have to authorize a raising of the debt ceiling in order to make sure that those bills are paid. And so what Congress canít do is tell me to spend X and then say, but weíre not going to give you the authority to go ahead and pay the bills.

And -- and I just want to repeat, because I think sometimes the American people understandably arenít following all -- all the debates here in Washington, raising the debt ceiling does not authorize us to spend more. All it does is say that America will pay its bills. And we are not a deadbeat nation. And the consequences of us not paying our bills, as I outlined in my opening statement, would be disastrous.

So I understand the impulse to try to get around this in a simple way. But thereís one way to get around this. Thereís one way to deal with it, and that is for Congress to authorize me to pay for those items of spending that they have already authorized.

And you know, the notion that Republicans in the House or maybe some Republicans in the Senate would suggest that in order for us to get our way on our spending priorities that we would risk the full faith and credit of the United States -- that, I think, is not what the founders intended. Thatís not how I think most Americans think our democracy should work. You know, theyíve got a point of view. Democrats in Congress have a point of view. They need to sit down and -- and work out a compromise.

Q: (Off mic.)

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Yeah.

Q: (Off mic.)

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Yeah.

Q: So if youíre not negotiating and they say you have to negotiate and youíre not considering another plan B, do you think we should wait it out and -- (off mic)?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, look, Chuck, there -- there are -- thereís a pretty straightforward way of doing this, and that is to set the debt ceiling aside, we pay our bills and then we have a vigorous debate about how weíre going to do further deficit reduction in a balanced way.

I keep in mind that, you know, what weíve heard from some Republicans in both the House and the Senate is that they will only increase the debt ceiling by the amount of spending cuts that theyíre able to push through. And in order to replace the automatic spending cut, the sequester, thatís $1.2 trillion. Say it takes another trillion (dollars) or trillion two to get us through one more year. Theyíd have to identify $2.5 trillion in cuts just to get the debt ceiling extended to next year -- 2.5 trillion (dollars).

They canít even -- Congress has not been able to identify $1.2 trillion in cuts that theyíre happy with, because these same Republicans say they donít want to cut defense. They claim that they donít want to gut Medicare or harm the vulnerable, but the truth of the matter is, is that you canít meet their own criteria without drastically cutting Medicare or having an impact on Medicaid or affecting our defense spending. So the math just doesnít add up.

Now, what -- hereís what would work. What would work would be for us to say, weíve already done close to $2 trillion in deficit reduction, and if you add the interest that we wonít be paying because of less spending and increased revenue, it adds up to about $2.5 trillion.

The consensus is we need about $4 trillion to stabilize our debt and our deficit, which means we need about $1.5 trillion more. The package that I offered to Speaker Boehner before we -- before the new year would achieve that. We were actually fairly close in terms of arriving at that number.

So -- so if the goal is to make sure that we are being responsible about our debt and our deficit, if thatís the conversation weíre having, Iím happy to have that conversation. And by closing some additional loopholes through tax reform -- which Speaker Boehner has acknowledged can raise money in a sensible way -- and by doing some additional cuts, including making sure that we are reducing our health care spending, which is the main driver of our deficits, we can arrive at a package to get this thing done. Iím happy to have that conversation.

What I will not do is to have that negotiation with a gun at the head of the American people; the threat that unless we get our way, unless you gut Medicare or Medicaid or, you know, otherwise slash things that the American people donít believe should be slashed, that weíre going to threaten to wreck the entire economy. That is not how historically this has been done. Thatís not how weíre going to do it this time.

Q: Thereís no plan -- (off mic) -- youíre not searching for any other ideas, or are you --

PRESIDENT OBAMA: What -- what -- what Iím --

Q: -- let me ask -- (inaudible).

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Chuck, what Iím saying to you is that there is no simpler solution; no ready, credible solution other than Congress either give me the authority to raise the debt ceiling, or exercise the responsibility that they have kept for themselves and raise the debt ceiling, because this is about paying your bills.

Everybody -- everybody here understands this. I mean, this is not a complicated concept. You donít go out to dinner and then, you know, eat all you want and then leave without paying the check. And if you do, youíre breaking the law.

And Congress is -- should think about it the same way that the American people do. You donít -- now if -- if Congress wants to have a debate about maybe we shouldnít go out to dinner next time, maybe we should go to a more modest restaurant, thatís fine. That -- thatís a debate that we should have. But you donít -- you donít say, in order for me to control my appetites, Iím going to not pay the people who are provided me services, people who already lent me the money. That -- thatís not -- thatís not showing any discipline. All thatís doing is not meeting your obligations. You canít do that.

And -- and -- and -- and thatís not a credible way to run this government. We -- weíve got to stop lurching from crisis to crisis to crisis when thereís this clear path ahead of us that simply requires some discipline, some responsibility and some compromise. Thatís where we need to go. Thatís how this needs to work.

57. THANK YOU!! I did go to the link provided, but all I could get from it was

the very general information that Todd had asked something about the debt ceiling and Obama had made it clear that it was about paying what we already owe, not about new spending. But that wasn't exactly informative about how he had "schooled" Chuck Tood.

I don't understand why people who post videos are unwilling to provide a brief summary, or why when asked to do so, their response is, "Just follow the link," when the linked page also doesn't summarize the video very effectively.

It reminds me of the comeback that was so common among those who fully understood computers in the early days of personal computing. We non-experts would ask to have something technical explained, and the computer experts would snarl, "RTFM!"* But the "FM" was written in such incomprehensible technospeak that it was like a foreign language to those of us who were new to computers.

36. Obama was very clear and concise

He explained what the debt ceiling was and why it is important to raise it and the consequences of not raising it.

He also make it clear that the GOP is the problem.

Chuck Todd, trying to make shit, asked President Barack Obama whether or not he would invoke the 14th Amendment in order to raise the nationís debt ceiling without Congressís approval.

Obama told him that if the House and the Senate want to give him that authority in order to avoid making the tough votes he would be happy to take it.

it's not in the media's self-interest to have a well informed Public.

P.M. Carpenter and chips bring this to light kinda like when Jon Stewart talks about republicons. It's horrible but he makes it bearable through his hysterical take on it.

"BREAKING NEWS: RAISING THE DEBT CEILING DOES NOT AUTHORIZE MORE SPENDING!!"

Why is that "breaking news"? Why hasn't the "media" already informed the American People of that?

Response to Cha (Reply #34)

Mon Jan 14, 2013, 06:09 PM

45. You are Welcome, Cha

Interesting...from Wiki.

Television ratings from 2008 show that the program generally has 1.45 to 1.6 million viewers nightly, a high figure for cable television. In demographic terms, the viewership is skewed to a relatively young and well educated audience compared to traditional news shows. A 2004 Nielsen Media Research study commissioned by Comedy Central put the median age at 35. During the 2004 U.S. presidential election, the show received more male viewers in the 18Ė34 year old age demographic than Nightline, Meet the Press, Hannity & Colmes and all of the evening news broadcasts. Because of this, commentators such as Howard Dean and Ted Koppel posit that Stewart serves as a real source of news for young people, regardless of his intentions.

The show's writers reject the idea that The Daily Show has become a source of news for young people. Stewart argues that Americans are living in an "age of information osmosis" in which it is close to impossible to gain one's news from any single source, and says that his show succeeds comedically because the viewers already have some knowledge about current events. "Our show would not be valuable to people who didn't understand the news because it wouldn't make sense," he argues. "We make assumptions about your level of knowledge that... if we were your only source of news, you would just watch our show and think, 'I don't know what's happening.'"

A 2006 study published by Indiana University tried to compare the substantive amount of information of The Daily Show against prime time network news broadcasts, and concluded that when it comes to substance, there is little difference between The Daily Show and other news outlets. The study contended that, since both programs are more focused on the nature of "infotainment" and ratings than on the dissemination of information, both are broadly equal in terms of the amount of substantial news coverage they offer.
SNIP:
As the lines between comedy show and news show have blurred, Jon Stewart has come under pressure in some circles to engage in more serious journalism. Tucker Carlson and Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead have chastised Stewart for criticizing politicians and newspeople in his solo segments and then, in interviews with the same people, rarely taking them to task face-to-face. In 2004, Winstead expressed a desire for Stewart to ask harder satirical questions, saying, "When you are interviewing a Richard Perle or a Kissinger, if you give them a pass, then you become what you are satirizing. You have a war criminal sitting on your couchóto just let him be a war criminal sitting on your couch means you are having to respect some kind of boundary." She has argued that The Daily Show's success and access to the youth vote should allow Stewart to press political guests harder without fearing that they will not return to the show. In 2010, Winstead had changed her views, commenting that since 2004, Stewart did some of the hardest-hitting interviews on TV. Stewart said in 2003 that he does not think of himself as a social or media critic and rejects the idea that he has any journalistic role as an interviewer.

Bill: "I would say Oprah, she's worth about a hundred billion. Who would you save?"
Jon: "My family?"

ēOn his political hero: "I would say Robert Kennedy. He had a passion and a depth of belief, and an optimism, and a tenacity that I very much admired. He was one of the first people I remember learning about, and maybe his death left an indelible mark. I felt that Robert Kennedy was a man of political integrity."

ēWhen Bill says Clint Eastwood should run for president: "Well, why don't we ask him?" ...turns to empty chair

44. I've been waiting for defense spending to be mentioned

and he went there! Hallelujah!

And itís interesting that a lot of times you have people who recognize that when it comes to defense spending. Some of the same folks who say weíve got to cut spending or complain that government jobs donít do anything, when it comes to that defense contractor in their district, they think, ďWow, this is a pretty important part of the economy in my district and we shouldnít stop spending on that. Letís just make sure weíre not spending on those other folks.

52. Now you know why I don't like sniveling little Washington establishment reporters

and their Georgetown cocktail party talking points.
