OMG!! There is little hope for mankind...when will things change?

I just finished viewing Oliver Stone's "Untold History of the United States" episodes 1-7. Viewing this history and following up with reading today's and yesterday's WP is utterly frightening! When will people begin to elect honest, compassionate, peace-lovers to positions of power over their lives? Having also watched "The Tudors" and the history of England I cannot help but feel depressed. Stone's series ought to be required viewing for all students before graduating high school. And very sadly, it appears that President Obama has fallen into "exceptionalism" trap like so many before him. We the people keep electing seemingly the most devious and evil among us...the good men seem to scoffed at, considered weak or "commies,"

I sure was hoping for something different from Mr. Obama...

Remember that from Jerry Garcia?

7. OMG,,we were and are the evil we say we abhor!

I can't believe people who lived through these times would seek to deny any of it and not preach the gospel of peace to their children.

4. Something really astonishing in episode 7:

"His Defense Secretary ordered military leaders not to obey Nixon's orders." Wow. Could this be happening to President Obama right now? Is a shadow government actually thwarting the President's agenda and orders?

8. So you are implying President Obama is devious and evil?

That's what I'm picking up on from your post. Very clever to denigrate him using Stone's series. Nicely done.

13. Suggestions?

Did you see the series referred to by the OP? If so, please suggest books that should be read instead of what is seen on the TV set. Thanks.

Are books immune to propaganda and agenda?

12. I don't really think...

that you'll find an example of any empire throughout history whose leaders didn't believe it had a destiny ordained by divine providence that justified any actions undertaken in the name of maintaining and expanding power. From ancient Egypt through Rome and China and medieval France and early modern Spain and the Netherlands and Britain from the 1700's to the 20th century and now the USA.

The answer to "when will people elect honest, compassionate lovers of peace" is "never"; those people don't go into politics. If they do, they don't succeed, or succeed rarely. Effective political leaders are devious, Machiavellian, and always have an eye toward self-interest (which becomes national interest, in the manner of "l'etat c'est moi"); Franklin Roosevelt is perhaps the quintessential example (he was one of America's greatest Presidents, possibly the greatest, but he was also shrewd, calculating, knew to the inch just how far to go, and, in the words of Harry Truman, "the coldest sonofabitch I ever knew; he didn't give a damn for you or me, but he was a great President").
