New gun law that allows for civil confinement of people determined to be a threat to others.

NY Has Tentative Deal on Gun Control:
AP

The tentative agreement would further restrict New York's ban on assault weapons and limit the size of magazines to seven bullets, rather than the current 10. Other elements, pushed by Republicans, would refine a mental health law that allows for civil confinement of people determined to be a threat to others.

Sounds like they want to make sure anyone who could be a threat to others will be "civilly confined" so they won't have a chance to get a gun? If you see something say something. It will make us all safe. Our constitutional rights don"t matter. We need to be safe no matter what the cost.

*dripping sarcasm*

1. Taking guns away is a huge violation of civil rights..

Locking people up against their will on the other hand is just life in the land of the free.

2. I agree that there should be the means to confine people involuntarily

through the courts when a loved one or authority figure defines a threat to a person's self or others. It used to be that way, Raygun defunded it. Now for the police or family member to have someone committed they must either be able to self pay or the person must commit a criminal act.

If a person were involuntarily committed with due process, they would be entered into the NICS database as ineligible to buy firearms.

This isn't a monolithic issue. Some things which maybe should be done cannot because of constitutional limitations. Some things can be done to reduce the danger someone who shouldn't access guns is able to..we should consider all options..

3. I would limit magazine capacity by caliber and weapon type.

10 rounds for .22 cal and below, rifle or pistol.
7 rounds for pistols over .22 cal.
5 rounds for rifles over .22 cal
5 rounds for shotguns.

And collect all the high capacity magazines making it a serious felony to possess one after a certain date.
