Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Mon Jan 14, 2013, 08:47 AM

It is my personal belief that there will be no change in national gun or immigration laws.

There are too many obstructionists and cowards in the Congress.

Lots of bluster. No action.

1. immigration yes, guns unfortunately not. There are enough repukes who are going to try and pander

for the immigration vote. That was a clear message from the election

2. The the Congressional Republicans want to obstruct fixing our gun violence problems....

... then the next Congress will have a markedly different look.

The American public has had it with gun violence. Time to shit or get off the pot.

3. If there is real filibuster reform in the Senate ...

... then substantive bills like universal gun background checks and immigration reform could pass that body and move to the House.

That will put a lot more pressure on House Repuglicans to take up those bills -- and a coalition of Democrats and "less crazy" Repuglicans could actually pass some important things to send to the President for his signature.

Filibuster reform takes away an excuse by the House.

The importance of changing the filibuster rule in the Senate cannot be overstated.

4. Unfortunately I agree. The 113th congress may have 10 less TeaPartiers but still over 218 nut-jobs

it will be all the Congress concentrates on.

7. I think you're mostly right. There will be cosmetic changes because we have to "do something"

but none of the changes will have any real substance, which is how they'll be able to get it through congress.
