All this crap about protection. My guns are in no way here to protect you.

It's not my (or the police's job) to use a gun to protect anyone else. If someone is not threatening the life of the few people I care about I would not try to do anything with a gun to them.

It's selfish on my part but no way I would ever go through the horror of having to shoot a person for someone else's life.

1. The scenario is unlikely, but I would do it under clear enough circumstances.

I'd hate to do it, but I'm pretty sure that if the only thing between a murderer and a child or group of innocents was my trigger finger, I would use it.

12. It's very unlikely, but no way in hell I'd do it.

2. I never go into quick food & gas stores but if I did and someone came in with a gun...

I would shoot them if there was a clear shot. I am not going to second guess them and think that they will not shoot the clerk and witnesses in the store. It's not so much defending others as it is defending my own life.

20. Yeah, sure you would.

So what happens when you go in with your gun, someone sees you and decides to not second guess your intentions and shoots you?

25. Revealing a gun in public is called brandishing. You get jail time for it in Florida.

Florida is not an open carry state.

4. Well, if I were in a position to protect someone else, whatever the means, I would do it.

That's my nature. I would react. I don't think I'd have any control over my natural inclination to help.

6. One of the reasons I am against public toting are those cowboys who think they will save the day.

Don't want some friggin gun nut pulling a weapon or two because the odds are better without the fool's help. Besides, it's the cultists' love of guns that got us in this mess in the first place.

8. I include everyone in my list of those I'm protecting.

Even the idiots with the guns.

Once the shooting starts, everyone loses. Doesn't matter what color hat they are wearing.

after he tackled Loughner when he paused to reload and took his gun.

18. Then you're admitting that there's no real reason for anyone to have a gun.

Considering that A) You can't be expected to protect anyone else with your gun, B) Your gun doesn't really offer protection for yourself, and it follows that C) Nobody with a gun should be expected to protect anyone else.

The only real solution - based upon your statements in this thread - is to take all the guns away so nobody has them. That way everyone is protected all around. There's a small glimmer of sanity emerging here after all.

28. Yeah well, depends on the situation. If you carry, you are at risk of having it used against you-

and if you brandish it, better be able/willing to use it. Otherwise don't carry. You just never know what these people are going to do to bystanders. If you are at the scene you are involved, like it or not. It is after all, the fault of the assailant. I would never sit back and assume my life is not in danger when someone else's is. Getting a good shot is the hard part. Making sure you don't hit someone else unintentionally is what I would worry about. That DB just took his life into his own hands threatening the life of someone else. Too bad.
I won't bother asking an intruder in my home if this is going to be a simple robbery, assault or rape. I'm just gonna shoot. I'd be pissed that the person put me in that situation.
